Review of B and W Ball Mounts BWTS20049B

Today we're going to be taking a look at the B and W Tow and Stow 3-ball mount for a 2-1/2 inch by 2-1/2 inch trailer hitch receiver. The ball mount is going to have the built in hitch balls to let you hook up your trailer to your tow vehicle. The shank is going to slide into the trailer hitch receiver tube and then the hitch balls are going to provide the good connection points for your trailer coupler. One of the unique things about the unit is that it features a stowable design. What that does is it lets you store the hitch balls and the mounting platform on the back side of the mounting block underneath the hitch of your vehicle. It's a really nice design. In order to get it into a stowed position, we're simply going to pull the 2 rear pins and clips and then this unit swivels around back to the underside.

You would line back up the holes and then you would secure it in this position by reinstalling the pins and clips. What this does is it gives a clean, flush look to the back of the vehicle and it's going to move the mount and the balls to the underside, so if you're maneuvering around the back of your vehicle, if you're walking around the back of the vehicle, you don't have to worry about running into the hitch balls and hurting your legs or damaging your shins. They're out of the way. Then when you're ready to tow, you can just bring them back around to the front side. The unit also features an adjustable height feature. That's going to let you tow trailers of different heights using the same vehicle and the same ball mount.

It's also going to help insure that the ball height is level with the coupler height of your trailer for a nice, level towing setup. You can see how this can be adjusted up and down the shank to change the ball height on the ball mount. Once you find the appropriate height setting for your application, simple place in the pins and clips to secure it in place. This one is going to come with 3 differently sized hitch balls. You're going to get a 1-7/8th inch ball, you're going to get a 2 inch ball, and you're going to get a 2-5/16th inch ball. To switch between the differently sized balls, we need to pull out this front pin and clip.

That allows the hitch balls to rotate. That way you can choose whichever one is going to work best for your application. Once you find the right ball, you simply just reinsert the pin and secure it with the clip on the other side to lock it in place. The unit is made from a steel construction. We're looking at dual-processed chrome plating on the hitch balls. That's going to provide great resistance from rust and corrosion.

The unit is made from steel. It's going to feature a black powder coat finish on the shank, on the adjustment bar, and on the ball mount platform area right here, so that's going to be highly resistant from rust and corrosion as well. The pins are going to be made from stainless steel, so that's going to create sturdy rustproof connections. To get this secured on your hitch, it does require a hitch pin and clip or a hitch lock. Those items are sold separately. The pin holes are going to accept a 5/8th inch diameter pin. If you are in need of a hitch pin and clip or a hitch lock, you can check out some options here at When it comes to the gross towing weight, for the 1-7/8th inch ball it's going to have a capacity of 3,500 pounds. It's printed right there on top of the ball. For the 2 inch ball, we're looking at 7,500 pounds, and for the 2-5/16th inch ball 14,500 pounds. A few measurements I want to mention for you real quick. Taking a measurement from the center of the hitch balls to the center of each pin hole, these pin holes are going to be separated on center by 1-1/8th of an inch, so if we take a measurement from the center of the hitch balls to the center of that closest pin hole, that's going to give us a measurement . It looks to be about 9-3/8th inches. That means to that rear pin hole we're looking at 10-1/2 inches. If we have this in the stowed position, we can take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the front of the block. This is going to be how far it's going to stick out. You can go out to your vehicle, you can measure from the center of your hitch pin hole out this far and see how far this is going to stick out with it in the stowed position. To that closest pin hole we're looking at a measurement of 4-1/2 inches to the rear pin hole, we're looking at 5-5/8ths. When it comes to the drop, you can see that we have a pretty long mounting block here with the adjustment holes, so it's got the adjustment height design. These holes are going to be separated on center by 1-3/8th inches, so that's going to be the incremental height adjustment. With it in the lowest setting in the drop position it's going to give us a maximum drop of about 7 to 7-1/2 inches, depending on what ball you're using at the time. The 1-7/8th inch ball has a little bit more of a raised platform, so that's going to be about a drop of 7 inches measuring from the top of the shank or the inside top edge of the receiver tube of your hitch to the top of the ball platform. If you flip this over to the rise position with the unit at its highest setting, it's going to give you a maximum rise of about 7-1/2 inches, again measuring from the top of the shank to the top of the ball platform. Once again, the incremental height adjustment is 1-3/8ths of an inch, so you do have a lot of adjustment. This is a very versatile ball mount. B and W makes this product right here in the USA and they're going to cover it with a limited lifetime warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the B and W Tow and Stow 3-ball mount for a 2-1/2 inch hitch.
