Blue Ox - Tow Bars - BX88264 Review

Today we're taking a look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender. This hitch extender moves your receiver opening back to provide clearance for rear-mounted accessories. The unit's made from a sturdy steel construction, it's a really nice design. It has a corrosion-resistant black powder coat finish all the way around, so that protects it from the elements, keeps rust and corrosion away from the extender. It does come with a pin and clip, that's a 5/8 inch diameter pin. This is designed to fit into a two-inch by two-inch trailer hitch receiver, and as you can see here it has two pin holes at the back of this area right here, so it actually offers to different extension links. From the center of this pin hole right here to the center of this pin hole is about 12 1/2 inches.

From the center of this pin hole to the center of this pin hole is 14 1/2 inches. Those are your extension measurements. It has a maximum gross towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a maximum tongue weight capacity of 1,000 pounds. The overall length of the unit, measuring very front to very back, is about 18 1/8 inches long, and from the front of the receiver opening right here to the center of the pin hole measures about 2 1/2 inches. That's from this portion here to the center of that pin hole. Now, please note this hitch extender is designed for using hitch-mounted accessories or for flat towing only. Do not use to tow a trailer, using this extension will also reduce your hitch's tongue weight capacity by 50%, so please keep those items in mind. That's gonna do it for today's look at the Blue Ox Hitch Extender..

Why would this have a maximum tow weight of 10,000 lbs, but not be usable for towing? I’d like to tow a 7500 lb travel trailer with an extension to my hitch- with a load distribution hitch by a 2015 diesel Silverado 2500. I can’t seem to clearly figure out if that’s possible? Thanks-

This item is intended to be used for flat towing only (a vehicle 4-wheels down behind a motorhome), not for traditional towing, and not for used with a weight distribution system. We do have a selection of hitch extenders, that may have the proper extension that you need, but the use of an extender reduces the towing and tongue weight capacity of the hitch by 50 percent. Additionally, when using a weight distribution system that transfers the weight from the rear axles of the towing vehicle to the front axle the shank the the distribution has a limitation of how far it can be from the hitch receiver.
