Review of Curt Accessories and Parts C16540

Today we're going to take a look at the replacement head unit for the Curt A20 5th wheel trailer hitch, has a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this will replace the head unit on your Curt A20 5th wheel trailer hitch. Has the interlocking 2-jaw system on it, provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-king-pin contact, because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar models. Do you notice on the very front over here and right over here on the front of the jaws they do have built-in grease cert fittings for easy lubrication of the jaws. The head on this is a fully-articulating torsion head, gives you controlled coupling and a nice, stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hook up. Also, will suppress road shock which reduces that bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a short-throw, single-handle operation. Nice thing on this handle, it does self reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. The very back of the head, right under the head, they actually use a 3-point indicator system and it is color coded because it'll tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow, by showing you a certain color. What's nice is those lock indicators are visible from the cab of your truck, so when you're turning around hooking up, if you see what color is showing it tells you the position of the jaws. Right now it's showing green, that means your jaws are locked closed, it's safe to tow. If you'd open then up then it'd show yellow, that means the jaws are ready to couple, it's safe to back your truck in to couple up to your 5th wheel trailer.

If it shows red, that means the jaws are locked open, it's safe to pull the truck away but you do not want to couple when it's showing red. Also, it's a fast 1-pin head removal right here. If you pull this clip out, slide this large pin out, it allows you to take the head out from the cross member so it makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch from the vehicle. It does come with everything shown here. It includes this plastic lube plate that goes on your king pin and it lets that king pin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with the mounting hardware to attach this to the legs. This is constructed of a nice, sturdy steel, has a durable carbide powder coat finish to it. The application, this is for the Curt A20 5th wheel trailer hitch, which is part number C16140.

Gross towing weight on this is 20,000 pounds. Vertical load limit is 5,000 pounds. I just want to demonstrate how those jaws work on the hitch. What you want to do first is take your pinning clip off and that'll unlock the handle. As we had mentioned, it's a short-throw single-handle, you just pull it out a little bit, rotate it back, and you can see the jaws pop open. I happen to have an example here of a king pin, what would be on your 5th wheel.

Basically when you go to hookup . When this is open now if you look back here it would show yellow, which means you're ready to couple. Then you're hooking up, your king pin would slide right in. You can see once it slides in far enough the jaws will fully wrap around the king pin to hold it into place. Your handle slides all the way up into the locked position. The holes line up here so it allows you to drop the pin right through there. Then clip it and it locks the handle into place and you're all ready to tow. Then, when you're going to uncouple the same thing, you just reverse it. Open it up, it'll remove the king pin from the jaws. That should do it for the review on the replacement head unit for the Curt A20 5th wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity.
