Review of Curt Fifth Wheel C16044

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt 820 dual inaudible 00:00:03 trailer hitch for the Ram Towing Truck Package, as a 20,000 weight capacity. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 2013 and newer Ram trucks with the factory installed towing truck package. Now in any custom set part, I always like to recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show you this will work for your application. This is a 5th wheel hitch that'll mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your 5th wheel trailer. It does use the interlocking 2 jaw system here which provides a nice 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact. Because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than the slide bar model.

On the front of each jaw, if you look on the ends right there, you'll see 2 built in grease cert fittings. This is for easy lubrication of the jaws. Now the head on this is a fully articulating torsion head as you control coupling and a nice stable quiet ride. It will self align for easy hook up and it helps suppress any road shock to reduce that bothersome towing noise. It does have a nice lockable handle right here so pin and clip through the handle.

It's a short throw single handle operation and it does self reset to the ready to couple position after you've done uncoupled. It does offer a hitch height adjustment. Now hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of your hitch head and that's important because you always want your fifth wheel trailer to run as level as possible with your tow vehicle so when you do install this cross member to this side leg assembly, there's 3 rows of holes that you can adjust it to to get to correct hitch height for your application. Now, other main feature on this is they do offer a 3 point indicator system right here on the back of the head. What I'm going try to do is rotate this just so you can see when we're talking about it, the colors. It is a color coded system.

There we go. If you notice right under ahead there's a red green and yellow and this color coding system will tell you if your hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. These indicators are visible from the cab so when you're near the cab here looking back, you can see and look. Right now it's showing green and what that's telling you is that the jaws are completely circled around the kingpin. Now we don't have kingpin in here but if it was in there, that means it's ready to tow and when you'd open the handle, we pull the pin and clip off.

Then again you just pull it out, rotate it, you'll see the jaws open and then if you'll notice the color changes to yellow so basically these colors will indicate, when it was green the jaws we're locked close, you're safe to tow. When it's showing yellow, means the jaws are ready to couple so you're safe to back into the truck to couple up and if happens to show red as the other color, red means the jaws are locked open so it's safe to pull your truck away but you do not want to couple yet. Also, right down here you'll notice this large handle. There's a clip on the other side. If you pull that clip out, you can slide this large pin out and that'll allow you to lift the head out separate from the cross member so it makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Let's go ahead and rotate this back. There we go. Now this does come with . It includes this plastic loop crate. This goes onto your kingpin. It helps that kingpin glides smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Now on the legs themselves, they do use quarter turn anchors which allow for a quick installation removal and as we mentioned these are designed to drop into the 4 receiver pucks that are built into your Ram factory underbed rails. Basically all you have to do, have a pin and clipper, remove that, rotate this out a quarter of a turn and you'll notice the tabs turn. You'll do that on each corner and once you've got them all open then you can drop it right into the truck bed into the pucks. Once they drop into place, rotate it back a quarter of a turn and put your pin and clip back in there to hold it in and you do that on each corner to lock it into place. It's pretty simple installation. Also you'll notice they have these nuts right here. These anchors can be adjusted to help eliminate any chucking between the legs and the pucks. This hitch is a sturdy steel construction, has a nice durable carbite powder coat finish to it. The specs again on this, the gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds vertical load limit is 5,000 pounds. The hitch height adjustment, which we mentioned, is a 4 inch height adjustment so it's anywhere from 14 inches to 18 inches hitch height adjustment. The last thing I want to show you is the hitch head. Now we have the handles open. The jaws are open and as we remembered, it's showing yellow which means you're ready to couple. Here's an example. I got a rough what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel so what happens is when you're hooking up, you can see your kingpin. It'll slide right in between the 2 jaws and as it goes all the way back, once it gets back far enough, you'll see the jaws completely surround it. Your handle automatically goes into the locked position and then the holes will line up. You can take your pinning clip, drop your pin right through there, clip it, just like that and it locks your handle and then your kingpin or your 5th wheel will be locked into place ready to go and as we mentioned if you look back here from the cab, you'll see green which means it's safe to tow. That should do it for the review on the Curt 820 dual jaw 5th wheel trailer hitch for the Ram towing truck package with a 20,000 weight capacity.
