Review of Curt Fifth Wheel C16520-16026

Speaker 1: Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A16 fifth wheel trailer hitch for the Nissan Titan XD towing prep package. This has a 16,000-pound weight capacity. Now, the application for this hitch is 2016 and newer Nissan Titan XD trucks that have the factory installed towing prep package. Basically, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. This one uses the high strength interlocking two jaw system. It provides a nice 360-degree jaw to kingpin contact. Basically, the jaws fully wrap around the kingpin to minimize noise.

It gives you less rattle, more security than the slide bar models. Also, if you notice on the front there's a grease zerk fitting on this jaw and then one over on this jaw, so it has two built-in grease zerk fitting for easy lubrication of the jaws. You just put your grease gun on there and pump it full of grease. Now, the head on this is a fully articulating head. It gives you controlled coupling, a nice, stable, quiet ride. It does self-align for easy hookup, so it'll help suppress road shock and reduces the bothersome towing noise.

Now, the main feature on this hitch, it has a three point color coded lock indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in to ensure secure towing. What's nice about it is these lock indicators, the colors are visible from the cab, so if you're in the cab right here looking back at the colors and the shape it'll tell you what position the jaws are in.Right now with the jaws closed and locked, showing a green circle. Green circle means they're locked, closed, ready to tow. If we pop the pin and open the jaws it'll show a yellow triangle back here.

That yellow triangle means the jaws are open, you're ready to couple. Now, if it shows a red octagon that means the jaws are locked open, you're uncoupled. You do not want to tow in that position. It will self-reset in that position. As I mentioned, this is all visible from the cab.

If you look back it tells you what position it's in.The handle on this is a nice single throw handle operation to open the dual jaws. It has a pin and clip in it to keep the handle in the closed position. Basically, just pop the pin and clip out, and you'll see it's tethered so you won't lose it. All you have to do is take your handle, pull it out, rotate it back, and it automatically pops open the dual jaws. Now, this will self-reset to the ready to couple position after you uncouple your trailer. Once it closes the hole that lines up that the pin and clip goes through is actually large enough that you could put a padlock through there for added security if you wanted. Now, it does a fast one pin head removal for easy disassembly by one person. Right here, if you pull this clip off, this large pivot pin, there's a handle back here. You can pull that out. That'll release the head. You can take the head off, take the center out, take the legs out, so it helps make it come apart easily for one person to remove it.Now, this does come with the included plastic lube plate right here. This lube plate is what'll install onto your kingpin. It'll help that kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hook up. Stays on there to prevent any messy grease build up. All the installation hardware is included and even a nice detailed instruction manual. Now, this does offer a full range hitch height adjustment. Now, hitch height is always measured from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head. That's important because when you're towing a fifth wheel you want to keep your fifth wheel as level as possible with your tow vehicle. This will give you range when you bolt this in. There's about three rows of holes here, so it'll give you a range when you bolt it to these legs here. Anywhere from 13 inches to 17 inches so you can get it correct for application. Now, to install this into your truck it's a very fast, easy installation. Basically, this gooseneck post right here will drop into the gooseneck ball opening on your truck, and then right here there's two tabs that'll go into the receiver pucks on your truck bed. Basically, all you have to do to install it is there's a pin and clip here. Just open it up. Rotate this handle out and it'll rotate that tab. Rotate this one you a quarter of a turn and it'll rotate this tab. Right here you'll see the ball bearings on the post right there, so when you rotate this it'll release those ball bearings and that'll allow you to take it out. When you go to put it back in, you drop it in. Rotate this to lock those into place, and then again just rotate your handles back. That'll rotate these a quarter of a turn to lock them into the pucks. Same way there, and then just take your pin and clip and just install it in the hole, and it keeps it locked into position. Simple as that. Now, this is a sturdy steel construction. It has a nice durable carbide powder coat finish to it. Gross towing weight capacity on this hitch is 16,000. Now, you do always want to check the maximum towing capacity of your vehicle. Vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 4,000 pounds, and we mentioned the hitch height adjustment is anywheres from 13 to 17 inches. What I'm going to do now is with the jaws open I'm going to show you how the king pin would install into the jaws. Here's an example of what the kingpin would look on your fifth wheel. All you have to do is you see as it rotates back into the jaws once it gets far enough you can see the handle pops up into position. The jaws are locked around there.Last thing you have to do is just take your pin and clip, drop it right into the hole. Once you get that pin and clip into the hole . There you go. Just pop this clip onto the pin and it locks your handle in. You're all locked and ready to tow. Simple as that. That should do it for the review on the Curt A16 fifth wheel trailer hitch for the Nissan Titan XD towing prep package, and it has a 16,000-pound weight capacity.
