Curt Pintle Hitch - Pintle Hook - Ball Combo - CU97FR Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt Secure Latch Pintle Hitch with the 2-5/16" ball and a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now this pintle hook and hitch ball combo lets you hook up your heavy duty trailers to your tow vehicle, provides an attachment point for the lunette ring coupler and it also has the 2-5/16th inch diameter hitch ball to connect to standard ball couplers. Now this secure latch pintle hook is designed to mount to the secure latch adjustable slotted pintle mounts, which we do sell separately on our websites and it's listed on this product page as a related product but basically that pintle mount is a slotted mounting plate, so it allows for quick, easy height adjustment of the pintle hook and ball. You can see the two holes, let me flip this around. Two holes on each side. You put the bolts through there and then it'll slide up and down onto that adjustable mount to get it at the correct height you need. Now this does also use the auto locking system, which secures your lunette ring without manual coupling. I do want to demonstrate how that works.

So I happened to pull a lunette ring so we can demonstrate that. This is designed to fit lunette ring couplers that have an inner diameter of either 2-1/2" or three inches. This one I pulled actually has a three inch inner diameter. To install it, what you'll do is remove this tethered safety pin and clip and you can see it as tethered, so when you let it go, it'll just hang there so you don't lose it. Then what you'll do is you'll back up your tow vehicle until this lunette ring will bump right up here against this rounded backing plate. This built in rounded backing plate will help guide the ring onto the hitch.

So when you back up and you tap that, you're lined up all ready to go and you just lower your ring down onto the ball and when you get down far enough, this auto locking latch will secure the ring in place. You can see when you try to lift it up there won't go anywhere. Then to secure it, you'll just go ahead and put your pin back through, clip it, and that'll lock that latch in place so that ring won't come off.Now if you notice on this, actually, let me show you how to remove it and I want to talk about something else. We'll go ahead and remove the pin and clip and then you'll take this lever, push it until it hits the hitch ball and then what you'll do is as you raise this lunette ring, it'll remove from the connection and it flips the lever back into the ready to install position, so you're ready to go and install again We're not going to hook up again, so I'll just go ahead and clip it.But I also want to talk about, if you look down here, it has this cupped hook design on it and that's designed to hold the lunette ring tightly reducing chucking and noise; creates a nice, smoother, quieter ride than your standard pintle hitches. On the side here, let me turn this to the side, you can see the hook here and the hook over here.

These integrated hooks will keep your safety chains from dragging. Now they're not made to attach your safety chains to it. You don't want to attach it to this. You just want to put your safety chains in here to keep them up from dragging on the ground. Now this part is a cast iron construction. It is austempered for superior strength.

You can see it has a nice textured dark gray finish Teridium finish to resist corrosion, provides a nice premium look and the pintle ball is constructed of high strength drop-forge steel and if you notice both the ball and all the hardware is a nice corrosion resistant gold zinc finish. Gross trailer weight capacity on this is 20,000 pounds. The ball size diameter is 2-5/16th of an inch. Ball capacity, which is stamped on the top, is 14,000 pounds and the last thing I want to do is just give you some dimensions on this.So let me turn it this way. The overall height from the bottom of this nut all the way up to the highest point, that's going to be right about eight inches tall and then the length from the back here to the front is going to be right at about 7-3/8" long. But that should do it for the review on the Curt Secure Latch Pintle Hook with the 2-5/16th inch ball and a 20,000 pound weight capacity.
