Review of Curt RV Hitch C13701

Today, we're going to be taking a look at a Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch for RVs. This universal hitch is designed for use on RVs, and can be bolted to the vehicle frame or welded on for no-drill application. It's going to come with these heavy duty frame side brackets. These are separate parts, which are going to allow for maximum adjustability. These brackets are steel, and measure a quarter of an inch thick. They can slide along the hitch body to match the width of your vehicle frame, so each one will slide along the hitch body. Makes it a very versatile hitch.

It fits frame widths anywhere from 18 inches to 51 inches wide. It will work on box frame, C channel frame, or I beam frames, and it's going to let you position the tube mounts toward the front or rear, putting the hitch body in the best location for clearance. Installation hardware is included for a bolt on installation. If you are choosing to bolt this on, drilling is required. Basically, two bolts will hold the brackets into place, so once you have it set you locate the position of the brackets, bolt goes through here, bolt goes through the same point on the other side, and on the inside of the tube the nuts would need to be tightened down, and then you're going to have two bolts per bracket that would attach this to the frame of the RV. Fairly simple.

It's going to come with the hardware needed to get that done, as well as the fish wire to get the bolts in there and pulled through the mount holes. The hitch itself and the brackets are made from a steel construction. They feature a really nice black powder coated finish, so it's going to do a great job at resisting rust and corrosion. The solid steel construction offers maximum strength and safety. Now, this right here is the receiver tube of your hitch. It's going to offer two inch by two inch opening.

It's going to have a class three rating, with a maximum gross trailer weight of 5,000 pounds. When used with weight distribution, that increases to 6,000 pounds. Tongue length capacity is 500 pounds, or 600 pounds if used with weight distribution. The distance that we have between the mounting bolt holes here on the bracket, these are separated on center by eight and five eights of an inch apart. The cross tube, that's this tube right here, it's gonna have a drop of around two inches. That's measuring from the top of the mounting plate to the top of the cross tube, so two inches, and then you're going to have an addition two and a half inches of drop from the top of the cross tube to the top of the receiver tube. The unit's covered with a limited lifetime warranty.

Now, a couple notes that I need to mention. This is for use with RV-approved accessories only. The pinholes on the unit measure five eights of an inch, so it'll accept standard hitch pins and clips, or hitch locks. It's also got the nice, large safety chain loops, one located on each side, so those are going to be welded to the bottom of the receiver tube. Very strong and durable connection points, but again, it is for use with RV-approved accessories only. The main hitch body tube, that's this tube right here, a cross tube, this can be trimmed so that the ends are flush with the frame brackets. After trimming, you'll want to coat the bare metal with paint to protect against rust and corrosion, and also, if welding this hitch, all welding surfaces must be cleaned to bare metal or the weld will not be the required strength and may void the warranty. That's going to do it for today's look at the Curt Adjustable Width Trailer Hitch for RVs.
