Demco Brake Actuator - Hydraulic Drum Brake A Frame Trailers 2" Coupler - DM8509602 Review

Hi, everybody, Andy here with etrailer.com And today we're gonna take a look at this Demco hydraulic drum break actuator for A-frame trailers with a two inch bulldog coupler. Now, this is also identified by the model number DA91. This hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So, when this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder, this in turn is going to supply the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

And, as I mentioned, this does have a two inch bulldog coupler and this bulldog Collar-Lok coupler is going to fit tightly around that two inch hitch ball for that secure connection. The pin style fastener holds the collar in place around the base of the hinge ball socket. And what I'm gonna do is just give you a demonstration of how this works. So, I pulled this collar back and that is going to bring that hinged ball socket, that's gonna allow that to open up. And I have an example of a two inch ball right here.

And, so, I'm just going to make sure that that's in there and then just slide this collar over that. And, as you can see, the ball is secure in the coupler and then you will just put this pin back in and that's going to prevent the collar from sliding back. So, that's a really nice feature and it's gonna be very easy to hook up and disconnect your coupler from your ball. So, I'll pull this collar back. It'll probably make the ball drop.

There we go. So, and then just push this back in and that collar will slide back over and I'll go ahead and replace our pin. So, this heavy duty design is great for utility, cargo, livestock and construction trailers. Now, the composite master cylinder is durable and efficient. It's glass-reinforced nylon construction resists rust and corrosion.

And the large reservoir provides increased capacity for break fluid. The automotive style diaphragm cap, that you see here, creates a completely enclosed system. And that's going to help prevent the contamination of your break fluid. The acetal copolymer lining, and you can probably see that right in here, that provides smooth operation as this actuator telescopes in and out. And then this breakaway cable is included with the snap hook that you see here on the safety cable. This is going to ensure a secure connection to your breakaway lever. And, so, what you'll wanna do is just connect this to your tow vehicle and this is gonna prevent a runaway trailer situation. So, if by chance your coupler becomes disconnected, then your tow vehicle will pull this cable and that will engage the brakes on your trailer. So, that's gonna prevent a runaway situation. Now, this is made in the USA of a heavy duty steel construction with this primed finish. And this is going to weld onto your 50 degree, A-frame trailer with hydraulic drum breaks. And the gross towing weight is 7,000 pounds with a maximum tongue weight of 700 pounds. And an important note is that because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes, so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. Well, that's gonna conclude our look today. I do hope that it was helpful for you. Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me..
