Demco Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DM8101022 Review

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at Today, we're gonna take a look at the Demco eight inch Adjustable Channel Center Position Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator, has a 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically, what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle, and with the surge brake system, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. So when this happens, the actuator will contract and it applies force to the master cylinder back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. Now, this one here has an acetal copolymer lining here, which will provide a nice, smooth operation as this actuator telescopes in and out.

If you noticed up front, it has this adjustable channel, has three different mounting positions for your coupler. Now, the coupler is not included, we do sell those separately on our website. Give you a few dimension on this, the channel height this have is gonna be eight inches tall, the inside width is gonna be right at three inches wide. You can see it has a nice prime finish to it, it is a heavy-duty steel construction. Now, on the back right back here, you can see they use a composite master cylinder, which is very durable and efficient.

It is a glass reinforced nylon construction, so it'll resist rust and corrosion, has a very large reservoir, provides increased capacity for your brake fluid. The very top right up here you can see, uses an automotive-style diaphragm cap, which creates a completely enclosed system, helps prevent contamination of your brake fluid. Also, if you noticed, just gonna unhook this, does include this breakaway cable with the hook, that's all included. Now, the breakaway is required by law, and what that does is it prevents a trailer runaway situation. Basically, when this is at the front of your trailer and you hook up to your tow vehicle, you'll take this hook right here, it has a keeper on it, and you'll hook this to your tow vehicle.

And then what happens if the trailer ever becomes detached from your tow vehicle, it will pull this cable, which will activate the lever, which will activate the master cylinder back here and apply the pressure to the brake system to apply the brakes on the trailer to keep it from a runaway situation. And again, that is required by law, and it is included with this actuator. Now, this is a bolt-on or a weld-on installation. You can see the mounting is designed to fit a straight three inch wide trailer tongue. This part is made in the USA.

Few specs again, this is for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes, gross towing weight capacity again is 12,500 pounds, maximum tongue weight capacity, 1,250 pounds. We mentioned the channel width inside, width up here is three inches, and this does go by a model number of DA10. One last note I do wanna mention on this actuator, because this does not include a reverse lockout back here on this master cylinder, it is recommended that you equip the trailer with either the reverse lockout solenoid that screws into the line right here or free backing brakes on your trailer, so that you can drive in reverse without this actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Demco eight inch Adjustable Channel Center Position Hydraulic Drum Brake Actuator with the 12,500 pound gross towing weight capacity..
