Demco Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DM8104311 Review

Hello everybody. This is Jeff at Today, we're gonna take a look at this Demco hydraulic disc brake actuator with the drop and the electric lockout, and this is for a 2 5/16 diameter ball. Has a 12,500 pound weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically, what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle.

So, with the surge brake system, the actuator is then triggered as the trailer moves forward once the tow vehicle starts to slow down. And when this happen, the actuator will contract, the inner portion will slide back and apply force to the master cylinder back here. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. This one also uses the nice, acetyl copolymer lining, provides a nice, smooth operation as the actuator telescopes in and out. I wanna zoom in and talk about up front here, the eZ-Latch coupler mechanism right here.

Gives you a nice, simple, secure hookup and disconnect. Basically, it'll let you hook up when the latch is in the closed position. You don't have to get out and open it. You just drop the coupler over the hitch ball and the latch will snap into place. It is designed, again, to fit a 2 5/16 diameter ball size.

And I happen to pull one of those just to demonstrate what we're talking about. Here's the 2 5/16 diameter ball. So, you'll be able to see if we put it up under there. So, when you get that over the ball, you don't even have to mess with that latch. As you push down, you notice it automatically locks it into place.

And you're hitched up, ready to go. Simple as that. To remove it, then you just open the latch all the way, and then lift it off the ball. Simple as that. But again, just to show you how with it closed, get over the ball, push down, it's automatically latched. Simple as that. Makes it very easy to couple. This is a heavy-duty, steel construction. Has a nice, sturdy reinforced outer casing. If you notice, it is zinc-plated to offer corrosion resistance. Gives you a 200-hour salt spray rating. If you notice up front here, it does have a built-in four-inch drop. This will help you match your tow vehicle height. It does use a heavy-duty, aluminum master cylinder in the back here, which is very durable, rustproof, and efficient. It's built from high pressure applications, and allows 50% greater displacement than standard master cylinders. Also, if you notice, attached to that master cylinder is this electric reverse lockout, and that'll let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes. This solenoid will activate automatically when you shift into reverse. And if you notice the two yellow wires on it, this solenoid will wire into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle, so that it can detect when you're in reverse. Also, up at the top if you notice, it does include this breakaway cable and latch hook. This is required by law, prevents a trailer runaway situation. What happens with this is you take your hook here, hook this to the tow vehicle. And in the case of if it comes detached from your tow vehicle, it'll pull this cable, which will activate the lever and apply the pressure in the master cylinder to apply the brakes. So, this is required by law and it does come with it. It is a bolt-on installation. If you look at the very bottom here, it mounts to a straight three-inch wide trailer tongue. And to mount this, it does require a 1/2 inch by 4 1/2 inch long grade 5 bolt. Now, those are not included. This part is made in the USA. Again, the application is for trailers with hydraulic disc brakes. Gross towing weight capacity of 12,500 pounds. Maximum tongue weight capacity of 1,250 pounds. And this actuator also goes by the model number of DA10. But that should do it for the review on the Demco hydraulic disc brake actuator with the drop, the electric lockout for 2 5/16 diameter ball. Has a 12,500 pound weight capacity..
