Demco Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator - DM8204702 Review

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Demco Hydraulic Disc Brake Actuator with the electric lockout for a 2 5/16 diameter ball, has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when the tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically, what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle, and with the surge brake system, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down, and when this happen, the actuator portion right here, this will contract and apply force to the master cylinder, which is located in the back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes. Now, this one uses a nice acetal copolymer lining right around here, this will provide a nice, smooth operation as the actuator will telescope in and out. Also, what's nice, this one has the new eZ-Latch coupler mechanism for a nice, simple, secure hookup and disconnect.

Basically, this will let you hook up when the latch is in the closed position like it is now, you just drop the coupler over the hitch ball and the latch will snap into place, I am gonna demonstrate that. As I mentioned, it does fit a 2 5/16 diameter ball, I happen to pull the ball, here's a 2 5/16 diameter ball. So what's nice is you don't even have to mess with opening this up or closing it, basically, just leave it in that position. And then what you'll notice is if we put the ball there, and you'll see when I lift this up and it goes over the ball, you can see as it goes down, you notice it's clips right into place and it's locked onto the ball. The latch is already closed for you, you can see it automatically latches, and you can see when you lift it up, it's hooked to the ball.

And then to release it, you just pull the trigger on the latch, lift the latch all the way up, and then you can just remove it from the ball, simple as that, so it makes it real easy to hook up to your hitch ball. This is a heavy-duty steel construction, has a nice, sturdy, reinforced outer casing, you can see the whole unit has a nice primed-finish to it. Now, in the back here, they do have an lockout solenoid, and it is attached to a master cylinder, and it is a nice, heavy-duty aluminum master cylinder, it's very durable, rust proof, and efficient, it's built for high pressure application. It does allow 50% greater displacement than a standard master cylinder. We mentioned the reverse lockout, you can see it's a solenoid here, this will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes.

The solenoid will activate automatically when you shift into reverse. You can see they have the two wires on it. Basically, the solenoid wires into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle, so that it can detect when you go into reverse. Now, it does also include a breakaway cable, that is required by law. We just unhook this and show you.

Here's your cable, and you can see on the end it has a nice hook with a keeper on it. That's all included, it is required by law, and what it does is prevents a trailer runaway situation. So basically, when you hook up to your tow vehicle, you'll take this hook here and hook that to the tow vehicle also. So what happens in a case when this comes detached from your tow vehicle, it'll pull on this cable, which will actuate a lever right here, which then will apply pressure to the master cylinder back here, which will then apply the brakes. So if it comes detached and it's in a runaway situation, this cable will automatically apply the brakes to stop it. And as I mentioned, it is required by law. Now, this is a weld-on installation, it's designed to mount to a straight three inch wide trailer tongue. This part is made in the USA. Few specs again, this is for trailers with hydraulic disc brakes, gross towing weight capacity capacity is 20,000 pounds, maximum tongue weight capacity of 2,000 pounds, and this actuator does go by the part number of DA20. But that should do it for the review on the Demco Hydraulic Disc Brake Actuator with the electric lockout for a 2 5/16 diameter ball, has a 20,000 pound gross towing weight capacity..
