Demco Gooseneck and Fifth Wheel Adapters - Adapts Truck - DM8550046 Review

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at http://www.etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at this Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter for Recessed Gooseneck Hitch Ball. Has a 21,000 pound weight capacity. Now this trailer hitch adapter will convert your recessed Gooseneck hitch ball to a 5th wheel hitch, lets you tow your 5th wheel trailer. This hitch head does use a nice wraparound single piece jaw, provides a secure connection. The 360 degree jaw to kingpin contact gives you less rattle, more security than the sidebar jaws.

Also, if you notice in the very front right here, let's sort of zoom in so we can see, there's this large, three-quarter-inch thick solid steel locking bar. This will reinforce the connection of your coupled trailer. It automatically locks into place when the jaw closes. The hitch head on this, it's a double pivot hitch head, eases hook-up, helps limit chucking. You can see it'll pivot front to back and also side to side. It does give you three hitch height settings to fit your application.

Basically, the hitch height is always measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head. This will give you three different settings. Basically, this yoke that the hitch head sits on can slide up or down in this space here. And then it has different three holes in it that you can slide this large pin through to secure to whatever hitch height you need. And the height settings it'll offer is 11 and a half inches, 12 and three-quarter inches, and 14 inches. Also in the bottom of the yoke where the hitch head sits in, there are cushioning polyurethane dampeners, helps reduce the noise, absorb any road shock.

The handle itself is a nice spring-loaded handle, has a nice comfort grip, allows for simple coupling. And what you see it has this nice tethered safety pin that'll let you secure the handle in the open or the closed position. You just lock it, and then to open it, just remove it. And again, it's tethered so it stays in place so you don't lose it.This is a sturdy steel construction. Has a nice rust resistant black powder coat finish on it.

And it is a nice lightweight two-piece design. Makes installation and removal quick and easy. If you just pulled the clip right over here, this linchpin, you can slide this large one-inch diameter pin out. That'll allow you to just lift the head off, and then you can take the assembly off. So it's two pieces, makes it very easy. And it is a quick, simple installation. This base assembly we'll install over the Gooseneck hitch ball in your recessed Gooseneck hitch. Basically the pin down here, you remove the clip on this side, pull this pin out, drop it over the gooseneck ball. Slide that pin back in, clip it, and it'll secure it to the base. This part is made in the USA. Application, again, it's for flatbed truck beds with the two and five-sixteenths diameter recess Gooseneck hitch ball.Gross towing weight capacity is 21,000 pounds. Vertical load limit is 5,250 pounds. Does come with this nice instruction manual to describe how it goes together, how it operates. Comes with the large pin and clips, and they're used to adjust your hitch height.Last thing I do want to show you is I happen to have an example right here, this is what a kingpin would look like in your 5th wheel. So what we're going to do is we're going to open it up, remove our safety pin here. And then if you pull the handle all the way out, you can hear it lock in the open position. And then when you go to hook up, 5th wheel will be coming in, the kingpin on your 5th wheel will slide right into the jaw. And you can see when it gets in far enough. You can see that it automatically slides across that thick bar up here, slides across, locks into place, holds your kingpin there. Your handles now lined up.You just take your safety pin here, slide it through, clip it, and that'll keep the handle from opening. And now you're all ready to go. And then to remove it, same way. Just take your pin out, pull up on the handle, and that'll remove from the 5th wheel head. But that should do it for the review on this Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter for the Recessed Gooseneck Hitch Ball. Has a 21,000 pound weight capacity.
