Review of Demco Trailer Brakes 18788-87

Today we're going to take a look at the Demco 10 inch left hand and right hand hydraulic drum brake assemblies with the galvanized finish for 3,500 pound axles. Now, these are marine-grade hydraulic drum brake assemblies, which are great for boat trailers. They are specifically designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators. These are a sturdy corrosion-resistant steel construction. If you notice they have the galvanized backing plates. They do use the stainless steel spring hardware for corrosion resistance and they have a zinc plated wheel cylinder.

These are a Uni-Servo design, which means it's a single plunger design, so it delivers 15 to 20% braking when it's in reverse. These are manual adjustment brakes, you have to adjust the gear down here to adjust them, so they do require a periodic manual adjustment. If you look on the backing plate, there'll be two holes down here, access holes, that you use to put your tool through to adjust your brakes. Those holes are usually left open, but if you notice on these they do include the rubber plugs to cover those holes. That's just nice, it keeps the dirt and the grime out of the brake assemblies and off the brake shoes. Now this part number will include the left hand driver side brake assembly and the right hand passenger side brake assembly. Now the mounting bolts and the hardware are sold separately. A few specs on this.

The dimensions, there's a 10 inch diameter by 2 1/4 inch wide and the way that's measured, the diameter would be from this brake shoe all the way across to this brake shoe. So there's your 10 inch diameter. The 2 1/4 inch would be the width of the pad on the shoe, 2 1/4 inches. If you notice on the back there's the four holes so it does design for a four hole mounting, brake mounting flange bolt pattern. It does require the use of 10 inch brake drums.

The wheel size that'll fit on these brakes are 13 inch, 14 inch and 15 inch and again, they are designed for axles rated up to 3,500 pounds. The last thing I just want to show you is how you tell the left hand driver side from the right hand passenger side. Now on new assemblies they'll usually have a sticker, right here you can see R for right side, and this one will have L for left side, but if that sticker wasn't on there, the easiest way to tell is you look at the length of the pad on the brake shoes. This pad goes from here to here. This one's just from here to here. The shorter pad will be the primary shoe and that'll always face the front of the trailer so that's telling you that this is the left hand driver side assembly and the same way on this one.

The pad is from here to here. This pad is just from here to here. This is the shorter pad so that points to the front being the primary shoe and that tells you this is the right hand passenger side assembly. That should it for the review on the Demco 10 inch left hand and right hand hydraulic drum brake assemblies with the galvanized finish for 3,500 pound axles.
