Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - Electric-Hydraulic Brake Actuator - 099-175-00 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Drum Brake Actuator for a two-inch ball. Has a 7,500 pound weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will synchronize your trailer drum brakes with your tow vehicle brakes.Basically, what happens is this actuator works by the surge or the push of the trailer towards your tow vehicle. This automatically synchronizes the trailer brakes with the tow vehicle axle brakes, and when the trailer pushes against the tow vehicle, this actuator will telescope right down here together and applies the force to the master cylinder right back here and that supplies the hydraulic pressure to your brakes. In the inside they do use a built-in dampening shock absorber to retard the telescoping shock against the hitch ball. The rollers right down here, you can see there's two rollers.

They have this grease Zerk fittings on the end. The reason they do that, as you can put your grease gun in there and pump grease in there to help lubricate and give you a nice, smooth operation of the telescoping. Now, because this model does not include a reverse lockout on the back, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer brakes. The master cylinder is an aluminum master cylinder. It's better at reducing corrosion than your cast steel master cylinders and the unique design on this that's a Drop-N-Go auto latch coupler mechanism ensures an easy secure connection. Basically, it'll automatically seat around and latch onto your hitch ball even when it's in the closed position.

Does include this pin here that you just pull out and then there's your latch right there. But we mentioned it's easy to install. I happened to pull a two inch hitch ball right here, and I'm going to show you what happens. It's this latch, as you can see in the closed position, you don't have to open it. And once it's on your ball, you can see when you push down, it'll automatically latch on there and you're ready to go without having to move the latch and then take your safety pin and just line it up, slide it through there, and that'll keep the latch from opening. Now, if you do want a coupler lock, we do sell those separately.

That's a lock that you can slide through this hole here and that'll lock it into place. We do sell those separately on our website. It has a nice low-profile handle. It's very easy to pull up to release it. So when you go to remove it, just pull up all the way on the handle and you can see it removes pretty easily from the ball.

Very simple installation and removal. And put our pin back through there. Now the breakaway kit, you can see right here on the side, that's the cable with this hook on it. This is included and that is required because what happens is this is a safety feature. You would extend this all the way out, hook this to your tow vehicle and what that's for is if by chance your trailer comes disconnected from your tow vehicle, it would pull on this cord like that. And when it pulls on it, it would activate the master cylinder to apply the brakes in a runaway situation. Now, this does use zinc plating, which is corrosion resistant. It is a durable steel construction. It is a bolt-on installation. You can see the holes back here for the bolt-on installation. Now the mounting hardware to install this is not included. The bolt holes center to center apart are three inches apart. And this part is made in the USA. Again, the application is for hydraulic drum brakes. The ball size that fits we mentioned is two inch diameter. It is designed to mount on a three inch wide channel tongue on your trailer. Weight capacity is 7,500 pounds, and the maximum tongue weight capacity is 700 pounds. Does come with a nice owner's manual to describe how this operates. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Drum Brake Actuator for the two inch ball with a 7,500 pound weight capacity.
