Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-336-337

Today we're going to take a look at the Dexter 12 inch hydraulic drum brake kit. It includes the left hand and right hand drum brake assemblies for 7,000 pound axles. Hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge type trailer brake actuators. These happen to be a duo servo design, which has the dual plunger design. These will deliver the same amount of braking when driving either forward or in reverse. These are manual adjustment brakes.

You can see down at the bottom here they have the adjustment gears that you would adjustment them with. They do require a periodic manual adjustment. What's also nice is they'll include the adjuster plug covers right here. These adjuster plugs are rubber. What's nice is that's the access hole you'll put your tool through when you adjust your brakes, and then when you're done usually that's open so they include these plugs that will keep any dirt or grime out of the brake assemblies and off the brake shoes. This part will include both the left hand driver's side and the right hand passenger side brake assemblies.

Also comes with the mounting hardware. It's a nut with the lock washer all attached. On a 12 inch brake assembly these bolts are already attached to the brake mounting phalange on the axle, so all you'll need is the nut with the washers to install it. A few dimensions on this, these are a 12 inch diameter by two inch wide brake assembly and what they're measuring is the diameter is from this brake shoe all the way over to this brake shoe. That'll give you your 12 inch diameter.

The width, the two inch wide means the width of the brake pad on the shoe. There's your two inch wide and again these are designed to fit on a brake mounting phalange hole pattern of five bolts. You can see the five holes right here. It does require the use of 12 inch brake drums. It does fit the wheel sizes of 14 1/2 inches, 15 inches, and 16 inches, and again, these are designed for axles rated up to 7,000 pounds. One thing I wanted to mention to you is how to tell the difference between the left hand and the right hand.

On a new assembly, of course, it'll have a sticker, but if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell the difference is look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. This pad goes from here to here. This one's all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is the primary shoe. That'll always face the front of the trailer, so that'll tell you that this is the left hand driver's side assembly. If we go over to the other one, same way, look at the length. The pad goes from here to here. This one goes from here all the way to here. It's longer, shorter. Shorter pad's the primary shoe. This will tell you that this is the right hand passenger side brake assembly. That should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch hydraulic drum brake kid with the left hand and right hand drum brake assemblies for 7,000 pound axles.
