Review of Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes 23-410-411

Toady we're gonna take a look at the Dexter 12 1/4" self-adjusting hydraulic drum brake kit, includes the left-hand and right-hand drum brake assemblies for 9,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs general duty axles. Now these hydraulic drum brake assemblies are designed for use with surge-type trailer brake actuators. These assemblies are a dual servo, which is the dual plunger design, delivers the same amount of braking when driving either forward or in reverse. These are self-adjusting brakes and you can tell that by the cable right here, you can see, that goes around the pulley, attaches to a lever down here, then adjusts your brakes automatically. Now the self-adjusting brakes automatically adjust to deliver optimum performance and braking power. There's no need for manual brake adjustments and of course proper adjustment will lead to better brake efficiency and less wear on your tow vehicle brakes. This part will include both the left-hand driver's side, right-hand passenger's side brake assemblies. Now the mounting bolts and hardware to install these are sold separately.

A few spec on this, the dimensions on these is 12 1/4" diameter x 3 3/8" wide and those measurements, the diameter will be from this shoe to the edge of this shoe, so if we put a ruler on that, there's your 12 1/4" diameter. The 3 3/8" wide would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe. So if we put a ruler on that, you can see there's your 3 3/8" wide. Now this is designed to go on a brake mounting flange bolt pattern of seven bolts and you can see those seven bolt holes right here. And it does require the use of 12 1/4" diameter brake drums. The wheel size it fits is 15" and larger, and again the axles, these are designed for 9,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs general duty axles. Now I just want to show you the difference of how you can tell the left-hand betwee- next to the right-hand assembly, the difference in the two.

Now on a new assembly, you'll see a sticker right here that'll tell you right-hand or left-hand, but if the sticker wasn't there the easiest way to tell is to look at the length of the pad on the brake shoe. So if you look at this one, the pad goes from here all the way to here. On here, this shoe goes from here to here, so this is a shorter shoe. This is the primary shoe. This will always face the front of the trailer.

So if that's the case, you can see this is you're right-hand passenger-side assembly. And if we go to the left-hand side, the same way, look at the length of the pad. This pad goes from here to here. This one's all the way from here to here. This is the shorter pad.

Again this will face the front of the trailer, 'cause it's the primary shoe, so this will be your left-hand driver's side assembly. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 1/4" self-adjusting hydraulic drum brake kit, left-hand and right-hand drum brake assemblies for 9,000 lbs and 10,000 lbs axles.
