Review of Dexter Trailer Brakes 23-112-113

Today we're gonna take a look at the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies with parking brake for 6,000 pound axles. Now electric brakes, they're easier to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website. There's no actuator hydraulic lines necessary with electric brakes. Now these assemblies do come with the manual parking brake levers. You can see right here at the very top.

And that's if you have a parking brake on your trailer, you can attach it right to that lever. These are also manual adjustment brakes, so they do require periodic manual adjustment. Right down here is your adjustment gear where you just turn your gear either in or out to adjust your brakes. Now what's nice on these assemblies, on the very back . Backing plate here. There's two access holes at the bottom that allow you to put your tool through to adjust your brakes.

Normally, those holes are less open. Here, they include these adjuster plugs, which will cover those access holes. Helps keep any dirt and grime from getting into your brake assembly and off your brake shoes. Now this part number will include both the left hand driver side, right hand passenger side brake assemblies. As you can see, the mounting hardware is also included. Now on 12 inch size brake assemblies like these, the bolts are usually already installed on the brake mounting flange.

So all you have to do is put your assemblies on and then use the nuts and lock washers to tighten them down. And you'll notice, the mounting hardware these, they come with the integrated lock washer and the nut. A few specs on this. The dimension is 12 inch diameter by two inches wide. And what that's measuring is the diameter is from here to here. This shoe to this shoe.

So if we go ruler, there's your 12 inch diameter. And the two inches wide would be the width of the pad on the brake shoe. There's your two inches wide. And on the back, you can see the five holes. It's a five bolt hold. It's for the five bolt brake mounting flange. Now these do require our 12 inch brake drums. The wheel size it'll fit on there are 14 and a half inches, 15 inches, and 16 inches. And they are designed for axles rated at 6,000 pounds. Now these are electric brakes. If you'll notice in the back, they have two wide wires coming out the back. They do need to be connected. One goes to the brake feed, the other goes to good clean ground. And they're both white wire, so either wire can be used for either function. And the last thing I just want to show you is how to tell the difference between your left hand driver side and right hand passenger side. Now on new assemblies, of course, you'll have a sticker that'll tell you that. But if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is just look at the length of the pad on the brake shoes. On this brake shoe, you'll see the pad goes from here up to here. Over on this one, it goes all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad. This is the shorter pad. The shorter pad is your primary shoe. That'll always face the front of the trailer. So it'll go this way. So that tells you this is the left hand driver side. And if you go to the other one, the pad is here to here. This pad is all the way from here to here. This is the longer. The shorter pad is this one, which is the primary. So that tells you this is the right hand passenger side assembly. But that should do it for the review on the Dexter 12 inch electric trailer brake kit with the left and right hand brake assemblies with parking brake for 6,000 pound axles.
