Review of Dexter Trailer Hubs and Drums 8-258-5UC1-EZ

Today we're going to review part number 8-258-5UC1-EZ. This is the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube axles with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern and it's designed to fit 13" to 15" wheels. This trailer hub assembly will fit on E-Z Lube axles. It includes everything shown here, the bearings, the races, which are preinstalled in the hub, the double width grease seal, the E-Z Lube grease cap, and the lug nuts. I mentioned this does fit on E-Z Lube axles and basically, the E-Z Lube axle design is designed to make lubricating your bearings very simple. In other words, you don't have to take your hub off, disassemble it all to get to the bearings to grease them.

All you'll have to do is on a E-Z Lube axle, the spindle at the very end has a grease zerk fitting in it that you'll attach your grease-gun to, pump the grease in and you're all ready to go. What will happen is with this cap, with this installed on the axle, then this cap on here you just remove the center rubber plug and that will give you access to that zerk fitting to lubricate your bearings. The application on this is for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube axles. The hub flange diameter, which is edge to edge here, just to give you an idea, is going to be 6 1/2" and the reason I mention that hub flange diameter is because that diameter will allow you to use anywhere from 13" to 15" wheels on this hub. The bolt pattern is 5 on 4 1/2". The wheel stud diameter is 1/2".

The weight capacity on this single hub is 1,250 lb. When you use this with another one, that would give you a total weight capacity of 2,500 lb, but these are for 2,000 lb axles so the axle capacity will limit you to the 2,000 lb. The bearings that are included, in this application they're actually using the same inner and outer bearing size and part number. The inner bearings, part number L44649, and back here you'll see the preinstalled race right there, so you put your inner bearing right in. Then you would end up taking your double width grease seal, tap that in to hold everything into place. Then go to the front and again you'll see the outer bearing race already preinstalled.

You'll take the other outer bearing, which is the same part number, L44649, drop that into place. This would slide over the spindle. Your spindle would come through here. Put your washer on. Put your nut on.

Tighten it down. Once everything is secure, just tap your cap right here on top and as I have mentioned, because this is a E-Z Lube cap, you can just pop this rubber plug out, just like that. With it installed, you'll have access to that zerk fitting on the end of the E-Z Lube spindle. Make lubricating very easy. Also, comes with the 5 1/2" lug nuts and those are designed to hold your wheel and tire assembly to this hub once you put that on. Hold it into place with these 1/2" lug nuts. Torque it down to the correct specs for your application. Just a note I want to mention to you is that on some axles that are rated at 2,000 lb, they might require a different seal and bearings. What you want to do is make sure the bearings in your hub that you're going to use this part number on will have the L44649 stamped on them. That's what this is designed for. If your 2,000 lb axle happens to use a different bearing, which usually is the L44643, then you'll have to use a different part number trailer hub for that application. Just a note on that. That should do it for the review of part number 8-258-5UC1-EZ, the Dexter Trailer Hub Assembly for 2,000-lb E-Z Lube axles, with the 5 on 4 1/2" bolt pattern. .
