Review of Flex-a-lite Transmission Coolers FLX45261V

Today we're going to take a look at the Flex-a-lite Heavy Duty Engine Oil or Transmission Oil Cooler with the Cooler Guard. This cooler has the 1/2-inch NPT female fittings on the end and it's a Class 5 rated cooler. This kit is the oil cooler with the cooler guard all included. The heavy duty oil cooler can be used for engine oil cooling or transmission oil cooling. Your engine will function as best when your engine oil is between 180 to 200 degrees, and engine oil will act as a coolant as well as a lubricant. If your oil gets too hot, your horsepower will drop, varnish forms inside the engine, and your oil starts to break down, so using a heavy duty oil cooler like this one in a towing application will give you longer life to the engine and the engine components by keeping that oil from overheating. This also can be used as a heavy duty transmission oil cooler, and because you're automatic transmission will work harder when you tow, it can also get hotter and heat, again, is one of the major enemies of your transmission.

So this aftermarket transmission cooler can keep your transmission from getting too hot, helping you get the best performance and long life out of your transmission. The kit does include this oil cooler, the installation hardware, and a set of detailed instruction. The tubing they use on this is a 5/8-inch diameter tubing. What's unique about this cooler is on the inside they design it with a high-twist turbulator design, and what that basically does is as the fluid goes through here, it actually causes it to twist which will improve the heat transfer. This cooler is an aerospace epoxy construction. I had mentioned it has the 1/2-inch NPT female fittings on both inlet and outlet. This is considered a six-pass configuration as you can see.

1-2-3-4-5-6. That means the fluid goes through the heat exchanger six different times. It does have a Class 5 rating. I want to give you some dimensions on this. We're going to give you the overall width from this end to this end. So if we put the tape measure on it, you can see it's right at 15 inches wide, the height from the very bottom to the top is right at 10-1/2 inches tall, and the depth on this is going to be right at 1-1/2 inches deep.

This part also comes with the cooler guard. This cooler guard is designed to fit the FLX 45261 transmission cooler, which is this one right here. This cooler guard is designed to protect the oil cooler from damage that could be caused by rocks and road debris without compromising the cooler's ability to reduce the fluid temperature. You can see it drops on right over there and protects the heat exchanger part of it. This part includes the aluminum-cut cooler guard itself. It does include the gator clips, which will help you attach this to the cooler itself, and what's nice about that is when you attach them it does provide an air gap between the guard and the cooler to help in the cooling.

It comes with all the mounting hardware, some zip ties, and also a nice set of detailed instructions. The dimensions on the guard itself: if we go the width, the width on the guard, you can see, is right at 12-1/2 inches wide; the height from the very bottom to the top is 11-1/4 inches tall; and the depth is going to be right at 1-3/4 inches deep on the under the cooler guard. That should do it for the review of the Flex-a-lite Heavy Duty Engine Oil or Transmission Oil Cooler with the Cooler Guard, has the 1/2-inch NPT female fittings, and a Class 5 rating.
