Review of Hydrastar Trailer Brakes HBA-10-252-82

Today we're going to take a look at the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for the Drum Brakes. Has 1,000 psi rating. This electric over hydraulic brake actuator will let you use an electric brake controller from inside your vehicle to adjust and control your trailer's hydraulic brakes. This actuator will respond to commands from the in-cab electric brake controller to apply your trailer brakes. It will activate your trailer brakes when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle. It does include the brake line kit right here for single or tandem axle trailers with all the hardware. It also includes this push-to-test breakaway kit with an integrated charger. It has the battery in it and the breakaway switch. This will give you greater control over your trailer's brakes than provided by standard hydraulic actuators.

This will give you much faster response time, give you proportion of braking for smooth, effective stops, and a quick adjustment when you change trailers or loads. It will overcome any problems associated with your standard surge brake actuators, because there will be no interference when you back up, even up hill, no more getting out of your vehicle to lock out the brakes. There's no brake drag or pushing sensation, which can occur with surge brakes when you drive downhill. It's improved safety because it will allow the use of a manual override feature that's included on most electric brake controllers, so you can engage the trailer brakes without having to apply your vehicle brakes. This actuator is constructed of an extruded aluminum to help resist corrosion. It does include this built-in bleeder that will let you flush out the air of your brakes.

This does install on your trailer. You can connect the wiring to your trailer's wiring and the hydraulic brake lines go right into this output for it right here. This is made in the USA. Again, the application on this is for single or tandem axle trailers with drum brakes. If you want to put it on a triple-axle trailer, you could do that but it does require an additional hydraulic line kit that we sell separately, part number 9579-01. Again, on this actuator, the maximum output pressure is 1,000 psi.

You do want to check with your trailer brake manufacturer for the pressure specifications. The vehicle, besides when you do install this, besides all this, it will require the following, which we do sell separately. The in-cab electric brake controller that I mentioned. You can use one if you already have it. We do sell some separately. Also, you do want to make sure you do have a 7-weight blade-style trailer connector mounted near the bumper at the rear of the vehicle. I just want to give you some dimensions on the actuator itself.

The overall length, if you notice there's two tabs on the bottom. I want to give you it, including the tabs. The overall length, including those tabs, is going to be right at 11-3/4" long. The width, if we turn it that way, it's going to be right at 3" at the widest point. Then the height of it they give is from the bottom to the top of the cap, and it's going to be right at 7-3/8" tall to the top of that cap. That should do it for the review of the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Drum Brakes with the 1,000 psi rating.
