Review of Hydrastar Trailer Brakes HBA16

Today we're going to take a look at the hydro-star electric over hydraulic break actuator with a 1600 PSI rating. This hydro-star electric over hydraulic actuator gives you a fast response time for shorter stopping distances, in emergency situations and even in your every day towing, you can control those fractions of a second, that might matter when it comes to stopping your trailer. A 1600 PSI pressure on this is suitable for disparate applications, and this will also eliminate the feel for being pushed by the trailer, eliminates any problems found when backing the trailer uphill with surge breaks, and it'll eliminate any break drag which is common with surge breaks on a downhill grade. As you can see this is a nice sealed extruded anodized aluminum housing. It's designed to mount to the trailer. It does require to be used with an in-cab break controller. It does work with most electronic break controllers that have the electric over hydraulic break function. This will also require a break away kit.

We do sell on separately on our website. It's part number HS496-82, and we do list it on this product page as a related product. This uses 12 volt DC operation. You use a solid state electronics, and you can fill it with either .3 or .4 break fluid. The hydro-star actuators are pretty easy to install. They do meet all DOT and federal breaking requirements unlike surge breaks, which are illegal in many states. To install this, you use these 4 12 gauge wires coming out the back right here.

The black wire would connect to the 12 volt constant power from your tow vehicle. The blue connects to the output from your in-cab break controller. The white will connect to the tow vehicle ground. The yellow will connect to the cold side of you breakaway switch, not the battery side. It comes with this nice owner's manual that describes how to install it and talks about all its features. As you can see here, the very top we have the filler cap, where you put your break fluid in.

It has a bleeder valve here to bleed off any air that might be in the system. Right here is the output port that connects to the hydraulic line using your break system. Just to give you some measurements, overall height we'll measure from the bottom to the top of the cap, you can see it's going to be right at 7 and 1/4 inches tall. The width we're going to measure including the mounting brackets, edge to edge, if we go edge to edge about 11 and 3/4 inches long. Then the width of it at the widest point is going to be right at 3 inches. That should do it for the review on the hydro-star electric over hydraulic break actuator with the 1600 PSI rating.
