Review of Lionshead Tires and Wheels LHWL401

Today, we're going to take a look at the Westlake ST235/80R16 radial trailer tire, in a load range E. Now, this radial tire's made of high quality rubber, which is reinforced by layers of steel and polyester belts. It is great for highway use, the tread design on it will help maximize road contact and traction. They do use a nylon overlay, to help prevent tread separation. The other nice thing, is they do use tread wear indicators, like you'll see on your passenger car tires. If you look on the shoulder, every so often, you'll see a TWI, for tread wear indicator, and it's about every 12-15".

Right where that says TWI, if you go right to the tread grooves, you'll see a raised area, it looks like a speed bump in the grooves, and that tread wear indicator's at 2/32 tread depth. What that tells you, is when this tire wears down, the the tread wear indicator would be a straight line all the way across the tread, it means your tire is worn out at 2/32. Basically, as your tire's wearing, if you look right where the tread wear indicator is designated, it'll give you an idea of how much tread wear you still have remaining on your tire. This tire is a special trailer tire design, it will couple the strength of a bias tire with the durability and stability of a radial tire. This is created specifically for trailers, it's not intended for use on any other vehicles. This tire will meet the Department of Transportation specifications.

A few specs on it, it is designed to fit on the wheel sizes of a 16" x 6" wide, 16" x 6 1/2", 16" x 7", and a 16" x 7 1/2". The tire size, which is stamped on the sidewall ST, for special trailer, 235/80R16, the are means it's a radial design tire. The section width on this would be 9.3", overall diameter, from the bottom to the top when it's inflated is 30.8". This tire is a load range E, which means it's a 10 ply rated tire. The maximum load capacity on this tire when used in a single tire application is 3,520 pounds at 80 PSI, and if it's used in a dual tire application, the capacity is 3,080 pounds at 80 PSI. One last thing, on a lot of your new trailer tires, they are coming with a speed rating stamped on them now.

The speed rating is always designated by a letter, and it's usually right after the size, if you look at the size of the tire right here, right after, you'll see 2 numbers, which are the load index, and then after that is the letter L. Speed rating L will mean 75 mile per hour speed rating. That should do it for the review on the Westlake ST235/80R16 radial trailer tire, in a load range E.
