Reese Fifth Wheel - Fixed Fifth Wheel - RP30918 Review

Today, we're going to take a look at the Reese M5 fifth wheel trailer hitch for the Ram towing prep package. And this has a 20,000 lbs weight capacity. Now this is a custom-fit part. It is designed to fit the 2013 and newer Dodge Ram and Ram 2,500 and 3,500 trucks with the 8 ft bed and the OEM Prep Package. And on a custom-fit part like this I always like to recommend for you to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show if this'll work for your application. Now this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your 5th wheel trailer.

It is designed to work with the factory installed 5th wheel towing prep package from Ram. They do use a single piece, always-ready talon jaw here that'll wrap around the kingpin to ensure proper connection. This design will offer superior jaw to kingpin contact for maximum security and minimum rattle. And the jaw is always ready to receive so you don't have to open the hitch before hooking up. It does have the fully articulating head, those fronts to back and side to side, with the extra large landing area which will ease hookup, helps limit chucking. You can see the large V notch here up front makes it easy to target the kingpin as you back up.

And it uses a built-in shock dampening technology to absorb any road shock. You can see the wide center section, how it goes out. This creates a nice solid, stable towing experience. And this does offer high pin lockout to ensure proper engagement. Now right here on the corner, they do offer a tow and no-tow indicator on the hitch head. It's visible from the cab or from the side of the truck bed.

Basically, what it'll show you is if it's showing red like it is now, that means it's not ready to tow, so you know not to go anywhere. If it shows all green, that'll mean that you're all ready to tow. And let me just spin that around so I can show you what we're talking about. If I spin that enough you can see right here, it's showing all red because it's in the ready to receive position. So it's not ready to tow yet, so it's showing red.

Once the kingpin would go in here and then the handle will move into the lock position, then it'll change to green to let you know that you can see from the cab or the sides of the truck that you're ready to tow. Also, on this, they give you a four inch vertical hitch height adjustment to fit your application. Hitch height is critical because when you go to tow, you want to make sure your trailer and your tow vehicle is as level as possible. So, when you bolt these legs to the side of this crossmember here, there's three rows of holes, so to give you three different sections to put it in, a total of 4". So, any where's your hitch height adjustment from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head we're going anywhere from 14", 16" or 18". The handle on this is a nice ergonomic, easy to reach handle. Let me spin it back around to show you. It lets you secure your trailer to the hitch. It comes with the pin and the clip right here, that you can, once the kingpin goes in and it closes and shows green, these holes line up. You can drop this pin and clip through there, to hold it into position. Now, if you want extra security, the holes are large enough. You could put a padlock through there. We do sell the padlock separately. Also, you could even gain improved cab clearance with the offset design of the center section. You can actually flip the center section around and it'll gain you 1.5" front to rear, for the extra clearance. It is a very fast, easy installation. These legs are designed to drop right into the four receiver pucks that are built into your Ram factory under bed rails. All you have to do to drop this into place, you can see the tabs right here. You just take your pin, release it. Turn that 90, a quarter of a turn, and you can see it'll rotate that. You do that on each corner, now it's ready. You drop it into the tab. Once they're all in the tabs, then you just rotate this back a quarter of a turn. You can see it, rotates this to lock it into place, put the pin back in, and you're all locked. And again, you do that at all four corners. Very simple to do.This is a sturdy steel construction. It has a nice durable powder coat finish to it. The handle, the latches and the jaw are all zinc finish to help maintain. It causes no rust or corrosion on the zinc plating. Application, again, this is for the Ram trucks with the factory installed towing prep package. Gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 lbs. The vertical load limit is 5,000 lbs. And now what I want to do is just show you how the hitch head will work. Basically, I got an example. Here's what a King pin would look like similar to the one on your fifth wheel. So again, the handle is in the ready to receive position; it's showing red.So, what you do is when you go to hook up, you backed up into the kingpin. The kingpin will just slide right into place, and you notice it automatically wraps around the King pin. The handle moved the hole's line up. And the main thing is if you look in this indicator, it's showing all green. All green means you're ready to tow. So, then all you have to do is just take your pin, just turn it around here, drop it through the hole, clip it. And it's held in place. You're all ready to go. Simple as that. And then to remove it, all you have to do is release the pin. And all have to do with the handle is just pull it out, pull the handle out and then just move it back. And if you move it all the way back, it'll hold into that position, and now you're ready to remove it. All you have to do is get in the truck and as you pull away, the way to the fifth wheel will pull it right out of there. You're all ready to go. And then to release it, just push it again, it'll release it back into the ready to receive position. Again. It's showing red, you're all ready to go, you can hook up again. But that should do it for the review on the Reese M5 fifth wheel trailer hitch for the Ram towing prep package with a 20,000 lbs weight capacity..

The Reese # RP30918 is designed to work with RAM trucks with the Towing Prep Package factory installed. This is rated for 20K of towing capacity. If you do not have the prep package you can use the Reese # RP30928 . This hitch is rated for 20K pounds towing capacity, but will require the Reese # RP56009-53 Outboard Install Kit. Both of these are fixed position hitches and will require a wedge to prevent rotating on the hitch if you choose to use with a Sidewinder.
