Reese Fifth Wheel - Fixed Fifth Wheel - RP30928 Review

Today we're going to take a look at the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch. This has a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now this 5th wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your 5th wheel trailer. It has a single-piece, always-ready Talon jaw right here in the head that will wrap around the king pin to ensure proper connection. This type of design offers superior jaw to king pin contact for maximum security and minimum rattle. And the jaw is always ready to receive, so you don't have to open the hitch before hooking up.

The head on this hitch is a fully articulating head with the extra large landing area, which eases hook-up, helps to limit chucking, does go front-to-back and side-to-side. Has a nice V-notch, makes it very easy to target the king pin as you back up, and it offers built-in shock-dampening technology to absorb any road shock. You can see the stance on it, has a very wide center section, which creates a nice solid, stable, towing experience. And on the back here, one of their main features is they offer a tow and no-tow indicator on the hitch-head right here, right on the corner. And it's visible from the cab or from the side of the truck bed. Basically what it does, let me spin it around to show it to you, look right on the corner there, you can see it's showing red right now.

Basically when it's showing red, like it is, that means it's not ready to tow. So that means you're not hooked up properly, so you shouldn't go anywhere. Now, when you do slide in and the king pin automatically hooks up in there, that handle will lock into position, and then it'll show green. Green will show you that it's ready to tow. So you'll be able to see that color indicator from either the cab or the side of the truck bed.Does offer a high pin lockout to ensure proper engagement.

The jaw has an internal plate that keeps the king pin from entering if it's too high to enter safely. So as a result, the king pin indicator will only change from red to green if that king pin is fully engaged in the jaw. Now, when you do put this together, the legs, the center section, all the head right here, the center section has three rows of holes. So it will give you a four inch vertical hitch height adjustment to fit your application. Basically hitch height is critical when you're towing your 5th wheel, because you want your 5th wheel and your tow vehicle to be as level as possible. So depending on what rows of holes you put it on, it'll give you a different hitch height, gives you a range of four inches.

So if you measure from the truck bed to the top of the hitch head, it'll go from 14 inches all the way up to eight. 14 inches, 16 inches, and 18 inches. So three different hitch height adjustments. The handle on this is a nice ergonomic, easy-to-reach handle. Let me spin this back around. This will let you secure your trailer to your hitch, comes with the pin and clip here. And once your hitch or your king pin slides in and the handle locks, these holes will line up and you can drop your pin and clip through there. Now, the holes are large enough, if you prefer for added security, you could put a padlock through there, padlocks we do sell separately. And also you can gain improved cab clearance with the offset design of the center section right here, the center section, it bolts into the middle here. If you need an extra one and a half inches, you can actually take the head off, rotate that center section 180 degrees, put the head back on, and you'll gain one and a half inches front to rear. This is a very simple installation. It does require the base rails and an installation kit. Both of those items, we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This 5th wheel hitch is compatible with, B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. It's a sturdy steel construction, has a nice durable powder coat finish. The handle, the jaw, a lot of the latches, are all a zinc finish to help resist corrosion. And the specs again, gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds, vertical load limit is 5,000 pounds. And what I want to show you now is how the jaw would work. And again, it's in the ready-to-receive position right now. You can see it's showing red. So I'm going to give, here's an example, this is what a king pin would be like on your 5th wheel. So when you go to hook up, this will just slide in, and you can see once it slides in far enough, that jaw will come completely around and then you'll notice the handle popped into position, the holes line up. And then of course, right here, it's showing green, which means you're ready to tow, everything hooked up correctly. So all you have to do then is just take your pin, drop it through there, clip it, and you're all ready to go. And then to remove it, just take your pin and clip off, and then you just take your handle, pull it out, rotate it all the way to the back and you'll see it'll stay all the way open like that. And then when you pull away from your 5th wheel, the 5th wheel will pull it right out of the jaw. Simple as that, then all you have to do is just push this back and it'll reset into ready-to-receive position. You're ready to install again, simple as that. But that should do it for the review on the Reese M5 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity..
