Tekonsha Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - 118553 Review

Ellen: Hey everybody. I'm Ellen here at etrailer.com. We're going to be taking a quick look at the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness. This allows you to have a four-pole plug at the back of your vehicle, so you can connect to your trailer, brakes, lights, or any other kind of accessory that you might have on the back of your vehicle that uses that four-pole flat.So it's going to work with our vehicle's existing wiring, so it's pretty easy to install. There's no cutting or splicing into the existing wiring. It just plugs right in line with that factory wiring so it makes it really easy to install.

So let's talk about that a little bit and go over some of the details and specs of this wiring kit. This is a custom fit for the 2012 through the current year model of the Nissan NV. So that's going to work for the 1500, the 2500 and the 3500. It comes with everything you see laid out on the table here. So this is going to be our actual wiring harness and the module box. This is kind of something that sets Tekonsha apart from other manufacturers.

They have this really nice compact module box that's kind of the nerve center of our wiring and they put this padding material in there so it kind of helps to seal everything up. We don't have to worry about any water getting in there or seeping in causing any issues. And it also helps to protect all that wiring from any kind of vibrations. So you don't have to worry about the wires coming disconnected from the circuit board inside. It just makes for a really durable box overall.

So even if you're installing this portion inside or outside, it should be able to withstand being mounted on your vehicle without any issues. This is what we're after. This is our four-pole plug. It has a molded cap to go over the top and help to protect those connections from any kind of dust, dirt, debris, and water from getting in there and causing any corrosion. Coming off of the module box, we'll have our black wire that goes to power. We've got a good length of bulk wire to go up to the positive terminal on our battery.

And then between the bulk wire and our battery terminal, we have a fuse holder and a 15 amp included fuse. There's also a ring terminal to make that connection as well. And we do get two heat shrink butt connectors. These are both 10 to 12 gauge butt connectors so they're going to work well for our connections there. We have our driver's side connection. That's going to be our yellow and brown wires. So again, just plugs right in line. This is where it gets that T-Connector name, since this makes a T. Red and green will be our passenger side. So you just need to get access in behind the taillights on your vehicle and disconnect the wiring there, plug these guys in.So really the most time intensive part of this install is going to be just removing panels or finding a good place to put the wiring. You can wire this inside or outside. It depends on your preference, but just finding a good solid spot to put all that wiring, especially running the power wire up to the front end into the engine bay. You always want to stay away from any kind of sharp edges, anything that's going to be moving or any sources of heat. So stay away from your suspension and from your exhaust. It comes with a really healthy portion of zip ties to cinch off everything, make sure that everything is nice and tucked out of the way. And we get one extra long one, so you can use this for going around your hitch with your four-pole to keep that up and out of the way.Our last connection to make would be the ground wire. And it does come with a self tapping screw to make that connection or you can also try to find a existing ground in your NV. And then we'll have some double-sided tape for the back of our module box to secure that off in a nice spot. If you don't end up using this screw, you can also use that to cinch that down at the top.As far as the other specs with this, it is constructed of 16 gauge bonded wire and the amperage for the stop and turn lights is 4.2 amps per circuit, for the taillights it's 7.5 amps per circuit. And this is covered by a one-year limited warranty. That really about does it for our look at the T1 vehicle wiring harness from Tekonsha. A really reliable harness. We have really good results with these here at etrailer.com, so I'm sure you will too. Thanks for watching and we'll see you out there on the road.
