Titan Brake Actuator - Surge Brake Actuator with Reverse Lockout - T4748020 Review

Jeff: Hello, everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today we're going to take a look at the Titan lunette ring surge type disc brake actuator with the electric reverse lockout at an 8,000 pound gross towing weight capacity. Now this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. Basically what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration rule curve, and the momentum will push your trailer towards the rear of your vehicle. So with the surge brake system, this actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward once your tow vehicle starts to slow down.

So when this happened or when this happens, the actuator will actually contract inside here and applies force to the master cylinder at the very back here, and this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer brakes. This actuator here is a unique top slide roller design. You can see the roller right up here. This will help reduce resistance, starting to telescoping to help create a nice straight line movement. On this one if you notice up front here, has this integrated 3 inch lunette ring for use with pintil hitches. When they say 3 inch, what they're measuring is the inner hole diameter, so this is a 3 inch lunette ring. Now this is a sturdy, durable steel construction.

It will resist bending in any jackknife situations. Has a nice sink plating to provide corrosion resistance. And this one does include the reverse lockout, which is on the back here. It's a solenoid that's screwed into the master cylinder at the back here and then your brake lines attach. This will let you back up without actuating your trailer brakes.

The reverse lockout on this actuator is automatically activated when you shift your tow vehicle into reverse. You can see this solenoid has these two wires. These will wire into your trailer connector, which connects to your tow vehicle so that can detect when you're in reverse. So when your vehicle goes in reverse, that solenoid ensures that the hydraulic actuator does not activate your trailer brakes. This allows you to back up with the vehicle. Now to use this feature, you can see it has two wires.

So you do have to have a five way flat, a six way round, or a seven way trailer connector. And they're both black wires. So one goes to a ground, the other goes to your reverse light system. If you notice it comes with this nice built-in shield and actually protects the master cylinder and that solenoid valve from the elements and any damage. Now, a breakaway kit is included. You can see this cable that's connected to this lever. This breakaway kit is required. It hooks to your tow vehicle. So in a case of if this would become detached from your tow vehicle, it would pull on this cable, which would activate the lever, which would apply the brakes to the trailer. It helps prevent a runaway situation with your trailer. Now, this is a bolt on installation. If you can see right on the bottom here the range of holes it has, it's designed to bolt onto your trailer tongue. Application, this is for trailers with disc brakes. Gross towing weight capacity, again, is 8,000 pounds. Tongue weight capacity is 800 pounds, and it is designed to mount onto a 3 inch wide trailer tongue. But that should do it for the review on the Titan lunette ring surge type disc brake actuator with the electric reverse lockout at an 8,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.
