Review of etrailer Trailer Brakes AKEBRK-2

Today we're going to take a look at the seven inch electric trailer brake assembly kit. This is a left-hand assembly and a right-hand assembly for 2000 pound axles. Now, these electric brakes are easy to install. They offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. They basically require only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately on our website, so there's not actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. The brake pads, they use an automotive-grade friction material which is molded to the brake shoe. They're fully bonded, they're not riveted to the shoe so it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque.

If you notice on the edges of the pads, they are tapered and then they circular grind the pads which gives you less chance of the pads cracking and crumbling that could lead to a mechanical block-up. Now these are manual adjustment brakes. Periodic manual adjustment is required. The adjusting gear down here is a fine-tooth brake adjustment gear, allows for more precise setting. There is no break-in geoid needed following your initial adjustment. The backing plates on these are E-coated, so they do resist wear and corrosion.

If you notice that the rubber adjuster plug is installed in here, they do come with it. This will help keep the hole closed to keep any dirt and grime from getting in to your brake assembly and off of your brake shoes. Now this part does include everything shown here, the left-hand, driver side brake assembly, the right-hand, passenger side brake assembly. All your mounting hardware, it's a 7/16" size mounting hardware, so it gives you the lock washers and the 7/16" nut that is used to hold these on to your brake mounting flange. Now these assemblies do meet the QAI and CSA certification. These are electric brakes, so if you notice on the back there'll be two wires coming out, two white wires.

It requires those to be connected. One goes to good, clean ground, the other to the brake feed for power. Because they are both white wires, you can use either wire for either function, doesn't matter. Again, a few specs on this. The application is for standard hub and drum assemblies, including Dexter, Lipford and Alco. The size is seven inches by one-and-a-quarter inches, and what that size is telling you is that the seven inches would be the diameter, measured from here to here.

If we take our ruler, there's our seven inches. The one-and-a-quarter would be the width of the pad. One-and-a-quarter inches. We talked about, if you see the four bolts right here, that's designed to mount onto a four bolt brake mounting flange. It is designed for axles that are rated 2,000 pounds. One last thing I do want to mention is these come as a left-hand and a right-hand assembly. When you get them brand new, they'll usually have a sticker on them, but by instance if the sticker wasn't there, the easiest way to tell is look at the size of the pad on the brake shoe. This one goes from here to here. This one goes all the way from here to here. This is a longer pad, this is a shorter pad. The shorter pad on this brake shoe makes this the primary shoe, and that will face the front of the trailer. That will tell you that this is the left-hand, driver's side. On this one is the same way. If you look at the pad goes here to here, this one goes all the way here to here, that's the longer one. That's the shorter one, so that's the primary, faces the front, and this is the right-hand passenger side. That should do it for the review on the seven inch electric trailer brake assembly kit, left-hand and right-hand brake assemblies for 2,000 pound axles.
