Today we are going to take a look at the 10 inch right-hand self-adjusting electric brake assembly for a 3500 pound axle. Now this is an electric brake assembly, and these are easier to install and offer more user control than hydraulic brakes. An electric brake assembly requires only an electric brake controller, which we do sell separately. There is no actuator or hydraulic lines necessary. Now the brake shoes on this assembly, they are lined with an automotive grade friction material. Now this friction material is fully bonded. It is not riveted to the shoes.

It gives you a longer life and more braking torque. The lining also has tapered edges on it and then they do a circular grinding of the material, and the reason they do that is to prevent cracking and crumbling that can lead to a mechanical lock-up. Now this brake assembly is a self-adjusting brake, and you can tell that by the steel cable here. It goes around a pulley and connects to a lever that would adjust the star wheel down here. Now on a self-adjusting brake, it does not require any periodic manual adjustment like standard brakes and the gear down here is a fine-tooth brake adjustment gear, and that allows for a more precise setting. Also there is no break-in period needed following your initial adjustment.

Basically when you install this, you make your initial adjustment, and from then on, it should self-adjust as you need it. Now the backing plate that this is mounted to is an E-coated backing plate. It helps resist wear and corrosion. Also one thing I wanted to show you on the backing plate, at the very bottom there are always two holes on your backing plate that you can access that star wheel for adjusting, and usually it is open. Here they do include the adjuster plugs. You do want to have plugs in there to keep any dirt or debris from getting into your brake assembly and causing problems, so this does come with the adjuster plugs.

It also has the mounting bolts installed, so when you go to install this onto your brake mounting flange, the bolts are here. Now the nuts and the lock washers that are needed, those we do sell separately. Now this assembly is certified for QAI, which is Quality Assurance International, and CSA, which is Canadian Standards Association. The size on this is a 10 inch by 2-1/4 inch, and this is a passenger side electric trailer brake assembly. The passenger side is the right-hand side, and when they say 10 by 2-1/4, what you are measuring is 10 inches diameter, and then the 2-1/4 would be the width of the pad. If we take a ruler and do the diameter, you can see 10 inches, and the width of the lining is 2-1/4. For the passenger side or right-hand side, the easiest way to tell that, now they do come with a sticker that is marked that way, but if that sticker comes off, just by looking at it, the easiest way to tell is you look at the linings on the shoe. If you look at this shoe the lining is a lot shorter, and on this shoe the lining is a lot longer, so basically what will tell you is the shorter shoe pad will always be towards the front of the trailer, so if you did it that way, you can see that it is the passenger side or right-hand side of the trailer. Now this is for an axle of a 3500 pound rating.

Again, they are self-adjusting as we mentioned. If you notice on the back the studs that are included, it is a four bolt right mounting flange, so to install this, you want to make sure the brake mounting flange on your axle is a four bolt pattern. This does use 10 inch drums, and these are electric brakes. You do have to supply power to this magnet for them to work. If you notice the very back of the backing plate here, there are two green wires. Basically one wire is for the brake feed to supply power to that magnet and the other is for the ground. Now either wire can be used for either function, it doesn't matter. That should do it for the review on the 10 inch right-hand self-adjusting electric brake assembly for the 3500 pound axles.
