How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Nissan Maxima

Alright, today on this 09 Nissan Maxima, we are going to install part number 24796 from Draw-Tite. This will also apply to part number 60873 from Hidden Hitch. The first step is to go ahead and remove the exhaust on both sides of the vehicle of course. That will give us more room to put the hitch up and mark our holes for drilling. So let us go ahead and spray down the bolts with your favorite penetrant. Let it sit for awhile. Then go ahead and break the bolts loose. Below the muffler is a rubber hanger. It would be a good idea to spray it down with your favorite lubricant and go ahead and pull it out backwards. Alright, we have our driver side done. Let us go over to the passenger side and repeat the same process. OK, now the heat shield is going to be in the way of holding the hitch up into place. So, we are just going to push it out, away from the trunk pan here. You just want a general curve on it. That way we can get up, in between the bottom of the trunk pan here and the side of the frame. When we are all said and done, this will actually get pushed back in place. 1:01

The next step is going to be is to put the hitch up in position and to mark our holes. You want to slide it up in between the frame rails and then push it all of the way back towards the bumper to where it hits the sheet metal. And then we are going to mark our holes. And all we are going to do is just use this spray paint on it. We are in the trunk area. Let us go ahead and pull out the carpeting and the spare tire cover. We are over back on the driver side again and this part of the steel right here is where are holes are going to be drilled out for our hitch. And there are going to be some stiffener plates that get installed on the inside, just like this. So we have everything cleared out. We can go ahead and get back underneath the vehicle and drill out our holes. We are going to drill them out to 7/16 an inch. Alright, we are back in the trunk area and this is where our stiffener plates are going to sit. 1:59

Now what we are going to do also is go ahead and put a ring of sealant around the holes just to make sure that no fumes can get inside the cabin of the vehicle. Next we will go ahead and two of the carriage bolts in place. We are done there. Now let us go ahead and set a weight on top of these. That will help keep the bolts in place while I push the hitch up from underneath. And we will go ahead and repeat the same process over on the passenger side. You can see the hardware now, pointing down to the ground. Let us go ahead and lift our hitch up into position. And you will need an extra set of hands to do this also. And we will attach it with a nut and a lock washer. 3:01

Alright, once we have all of our hardware started, let us go ahead and snug them all down and then we will torque them down as specified in the instructions. With our hitch installed, let us go ahead and bend our heat shields back into place. Now we can go ahead and reinstall the exhaust. Double check our heat shield, make sure it is not touching. Alright, and reinstall the hardware for the exhaust. The next thing to do is go ahead and reinstall the carpet and the floor liner and we are good to go. Alright, we have our vehicle off of the lift. Let us go ahead and give you a couple of measurements on this particular vehicle. From the top of the hitch opening down to the ground is going to be 10-1/4 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole out to the edge of the bumper will be 7 inches. And there you have it for our install of part number 24796 from Draw-Tite on our 2009 Nissan Maxima.
