How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2002 Toyota Tundra

Today on this 2002 Toyota Tundra, were going to install the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, part number 90885, and we are also going to use the install kit part number ETBC7. So our first step involved is to go ahead and remove the factory four pole wiring harness, and we are going to mount our 7 pole bracket to that. There are two screws we are going to remove right here, remove the bracket from the four pole as well. Were going to remove the two Phillip screws to free up the bracket from the four pole, there is one here and one on the other side. Now our 7 pole bracket just barely misses the two mounting holes on the factory bracket, so what we are going to do is actually drill these out to 3/8ths of an inch. They will get pretty thin on the side here, but it will be enough to hold everything together, it will be almost factory when we are done.

Alright now attach to the bracket factory hardware. Next we can go ahead and start wiring the gray cable to the 7 pole connector itself and the loom, get everything wrapped up to go and ready to install. What we are going to do is wrap this up with electric tape and leave the leads out that we are going to need. We will need a four pole sticking out, and we will need our brake wire which is going to be blue, and our black wire for 12 volt power supply, and then we will wrap up our purple and white wire. Our white wire is going to connect directly to the frame for ground, and then the purple wire is going to be for reverse lights if it is ever needed.

And to our black and blue wires, we are going to install a gray cable which has black and white wires inside of it. What we are going to do is just peel it from the gray sheath, trim our wires back and make the connection, and we are going to go black to black, and white to blue. Cover those up with some electric tape. Next we are going to go ahead and install the loom along the wires about like this. Now go ahead and install the 7 pole to our bracket.

Now this is the 4 pole that comes from the 7 pole connector, and well plug that into the factory 4 pole that is on the truck. Well use some dielectric grease to help protect the contacts, well put these two together and wrap them up with some tape around them, and then well secure with zip tie. Well take our zip tie, and just thread them through the wires and back around. One last thing to do underneath the vehicle is to take a ground screw and attach to the frame, and you can put anywhere you want as long as it hits the frame of course, or you can just cross over right here, and we use a number 14 self tapping screw to attach. We will go ahead and start routing our gray cable towards the front of the vehicle.

Once we run our cable up to the front, when you run to the engine department, make sure you stay away from anything moving like the suspension components, steering column, or anything hot like the exhaust, okay and we will go ahead and pull it from the bottom up. Next we have to find a spot for our circuit breakers. If you mount them along here it will be kind of hard to find a spot to drill and get access to them. So what we are actually going to do is remove the battery and put it inside the fender well where we have plenty of room to work with. We will go ahead and pull our wire up from the bottom, make sure to stay safe, and then we will go ahead and route it to our battery. And we are going to be installing the 40 amp circuit breaker right here. Now well take the gray cable, well pull enough length to the circuit breaker plus some extra wire to go to the positive side of the battery then well cut off the excess, and dont throw away any excess wire, because that will be used in a little bit. Now what we are also going to need to do is take this gray cable here, were going to take the sheath and remove it. I will take our white wire, well just leave it out of the way for now, and take our black wire and run it back up to the battery, and well go ahead and zip tie it safe and out of the way, and well start working on our circuit breaker. Well go ahead and attach ring terminals to this wire. We are going to cut it in half right here. One half will go to the silver post, which goes out to the 7 pole connector, and the positive side which will go out to the battery, and the other half of this wire we will attach a larger ring terminal to and attach it to the battery. Now we will leave our final connection to the battery, we will leave that as one of the final things that we do. The next thing we need to do is find a point of entry from the outside to the inside of the vehicle. Now on this vehicle theres not too many rubber grommets to be running three 10 gage wires through, but we will just go ahead and drill a hole through the fire wall and install a grommet in this general area right here, well drill it from the inside out. Alright we are under the dash of the vehicle, theres a little knock out right here, we will go ahead and pull this out of our way, and well drill through right here. Well get a pot hole first and verify where it comes out at. Now well check back outside and make sure everything is okay, and then once weve established that we will go ahead and drill out our hole for final size for our bushing. Okay with our grommet installed, well go ahead and run our white wire through it. The next thing we are going to do is go ahead and find our location for our break light switch. Now if you follow the break pedal up, its going to be pretty far up at the top here, and its almost impossible to see, so the best thing to do in this application is to go ahead and remove the lower part of the dash, and there are four bolts that you have to remove one, two, three, and four, and the whole assembly just pops off going towards the steering wheel. Alright now remove the vent tubing here, slide it to the right and then you can pull it out to the left. Alright now we can get to your brake switch right here, it has a blue socket or connector, and well take a test wire to it to find out which one is our signal. Before I go back into the vehicle lets temporarily reconnect the battery, well need it to test the brake switch to find out which wire we need to connect to. Lets go ahead and test it, and look for the wire that only gets hot when you hit the brake pedal. So in this vehicle it looks like a green wire with a white stripe and silver banding. What we will do next is get the wiring harness from our brake controller, and we will go ahead and just tap into it. This is the harness comes the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, and what we are going to do is take the red wire thats what we need for our signal, and we will go ahead and connect that to our brake signal wire using the scotch lock that comes with the ETBC7 kit. Slide this scotch lock on there first, and then we will slide the red wire inside, make sure your wire is nice and straight on the inside, snap it shut, and then we will go ahead and test again at the end of our connector. Lets go ahead and hook up our blue wire, thats the output for the brake control, back to the white wire which will go to the blue wire back on the 7 pole. Trim the wire back and we will use one of the yellow butt connectors that come from the brake controller kit. And so what we will do is we will take that extra length of gray cable that we had earlier, well connect these up color for color and then we will run them back up to the battery compartment. I will take the rest of that wire and put it back through our grommet. Well go ahead and match up our lengths and then we will keep everything together go ahead and keep everything nice and neat, find a place to zip tie the wires, keep them out of the way, and then we can go ahead and put the panel back on the dash. Alright we will go ahead and mount a bracket on the bottom edge of the dash right here, and take your brake controller, and take a quick look and make sure its pointing with the truck you want this in a straight line going towards the front. Now it can be tilted this way, or anyway you want, or like this, however it will only take a little bit left to right. Well use the screws that comes with the brake controller to attach it to the dash. We will put the brake controller in the bracket now, we will leave it loose, we will go ahead and plug in our brake controller, and then we will go ahead and tighten everything up. Okay, we have additional wire, take it out of the way and we will leave that now. Okay with that we will go back underneath the hood; we will add another circuit breaker and make our final connection to the battery. Now we will use a 20 amp circuit breaker on this installation, now some brake controllers require a 30 amp so check the documentation with that. Alright now we have a gray cable ran the same way as our first cable, well go ahead and peel back the gray sheath back to the circuit breaker and then the black wire will go to the 12 volt power supply, and the white wire will actually go to ground, and then we are going to take the black wire and run it to the silver post again, we will add a ring terminal to that. The other half of the wire will get another ring terminal, go ahead and attach that to the circuit breaker, on the other half of the wire we will go ahead and match up our length where we are going to run to the positive terminal on the battery, add another larger ring terminal. To attach the brake controller to the circuit breaker, we will go to the silver post. Okay and the wire going to the battery we will connect to the copper post. Okay we will go ahead and deal with the white wire now and that will go to ground, so we will have to add one more ring terminal to it, a large one to connect to the ground. Alright now at this point lets get our wires out of the way and reinstall the battery. Reconnect the positive terminal, and run over our hot leads, and well make the actual connection to the post right here. And now on our ground we have a couple of options here. We can connect this right to the battery clamp and then to the battery, or we have a nice ground right here that comes off the battery, so I think we will actually use this instead, simply because these will corrode over time. Okay make the final connection back to the battery. Next thing is to check the brake controller and see if it has power. We have our two dots right here, this dot lets us know we have power, and also looks like it is on boost as well, and with that it will finish our install of part number 90885 the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, and our install kit part number ETBC7. .
