How to Install a Trailer Hitch on a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox

Today on this 2009 Chevrolet Equinox we are going to be installing Curt hitch, part number 13591. We are underneath the vehicle, we a re going to point out the mounting holes for the trailer hitch. Here at the center of the vehicle we have two existing weld nuts that we are going to be using as our center most attaching points for the trailer hitch. If you look here at the outboard side of the frame on the drivers and passenger sides, you can see we have two existing weld nuts here towards the bumper side that are right on top of each other. I do want to note that here on the Equinox, we are going to need to remove the fascia door that is here at the bottom of the fascia. :30

It may be also necessary to clean out the weld nuts thoroughly on any vehicle that has seen at least one winter because it is going to have some road grime and corrosion built up in the weld nuts. To do this just take a spray lubricant like a WD-40 and spray them out. Then take some sort of thick wire brush and run that in there to loosen up all the corrosion. We want to repeat that for all the weld nuts and then we can put the hitch up into position using the 12 millimeter bolts along with the conical tooth washer. To ensure that we get all the holes lines up properly, what I have done is put the lower bolt in here at the side of the frame on both the driver and passenger side. I am going to leave the upper ones out for a second and come to the middle and the bolts there. 1:16

Then we can come back to this side of the frame again and put the upper bolts in. This should ensure that we have the least amount of resistance when putting the hitch up into position. Now that we have all the bolts in place, when tightening them down,a you want to tighten the two at the center first, and then we will go back and tighten the ones on the side of the frame last. Now that we have all the bolts tightened down into place we want to go back through and tighten them all down. You want to check with the directions to verify the appropriate torque rating for each individual bolt. The last thing to do, is if it will fit you can put the fascia door back up into position. Now that we have our trailer hitch installed we want to give you a couple final dimensions that will help choosing your hitch accessories a little easier. From the top of the receiver tube opening to the ground is 13- 1/ 2 inches. From the center of the pin hole to clear the edge of the bumper is approximately 6 inches. That will conclude the installation of Curt hitch part number 13591 on a 2009 Chevrolet Equinox.
