How to Install the B and W Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch on a 2016 GMC Sierra 3500


Today on our 2016 GMC Sierra 3500 we'll be installing the B&W Turnover Ball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch with Custom Installation Kit, part number BWGNRK1016. Here's what our gooseneck looks like installed. As you can see, it's really simple to use. We have a very limited amount sticking up out of the bed with our drop down right here. We have our easy to use safety chain loops, which are spring loaded. You pull up on them, attach your safety chain, and let go.

Same on both sides. inaudible 00:00:45 simple, and easy to use. Really easy to hook up to our trailer. When we're not towing our trailer and when we want to have full access to our truck bed, the nice thing about this gooseneck from B&W is that we can store our ball upside down. I'll show you how to do that now. We'll grab our handle here on the driver side, pull it out and turn it clockwise until it latches into position.

Then we can go back into the bed and flip our ball over. We'll grab the ball, lift up, turn it over, and drop it on down. As you can see, our ball even has this nice handle here to grab with your finger to lift up. With the ball in the stored position you can see it sits flat with the section of our gooseneck here, so we'll have full use of our truck bed. Now with our ball flipped over we can take our handle, turn counterclockwise, and release it. As you can see, it springs back into position and secures our ball into place.

With our handle released you can see our ball does not go anywhere. We have a look straight down we can see the pin that goes across and secures our ball in the turnover gooseneck mount. Now, if we want to change the ball back over to tow position all we need to do is pull back the handle again, and you can see the pin move. Then we can lift the ball out and switch it back over, and re-secure the handle. The B&W Turnover Ball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch has a 30,000 pound gross trailer weight rating and a 7,500 pound vertical load limit. It comes with a 2 5/16 inch ball.

Obviously, we want to consult with the owner's manual of our vehicle to find out what it's rated to tow before we use the full 30,000 pound capacity of the hitch. Here's what our kit comes with. Obviously we have our gooseneck hitch right here, we have our turnover ball, and then we have our 2 rails that'll go underneath our bed. Then we have our safety chain hardware right here. Now that we've gone over what's included, we'll show you how to install it. The first thing you want to do, if you want, is to remove the spare tire; it'll give you a little bit more room. We've already done that. Now we'll open the tailgate and we'll get inside our truck bed and make a measurement. This measurement will vary if you have a short bed or a long bed truck, so just pay attention to the directions and follow those. Since it's been raining here today we'll take a towel here and make sure our bed's dry. We'll take a marker and we'll make a mark at our desired measurement. This will give us the distance from the end of the truck bed towards the front. Now we need to make sure that mark's centered. Now we'll go across the measurement of our truck bed; I'm going from this edge right here, butt up against it on the inside edge of it to the same on the other side. We'll divide that measurement by 2 to get our center point. We'll make a dot right here just like that. Now we'll drill a pilot hole right there in the middle. Clean up all of our shavings here. Now we'll take a 4 inch hole saw, go into our pilot hole, and make our hole for our gooseneck ball to come through. Now this heat shield right here on the passenger side of the vehicle right above our tire, we can remove it. There's a couple 13 millimeter bolts that hold it in place. These 2 out, there should be 1 more further underneath, but we need to go underneath the vehicle to get it out. There's another one on this other cross member right by our spare tire, there's that one too. Now we can grab our heat shield and slide it out, and we'll set it aside. We may be able to reinstall it later. Now on the passenger side of our vehicle this lip right here where our bed is joined together, we need to make a notch in it that's 2 inches wide. We'll make a mark here and here, and then it will come up all the way up like that, joining together. We have that done, we can take a rotary tool and cut through this. When you make this mark it doesn't really matter where you put it. I just kind of went above the bump stop here for our rear axle, in that general area. Anywhere in that spot will be fine, as long as it's in between these bolt holes here, you'll be good. Now we'll take 1 of our inch and 1/2 long bolts and the rubber O ring that's included and we'll go to our front rail, which is the one with the angle on it right here. We'll go to the second hole, come in like that, and I'll place the O ring on so the bolt doesn't fall off. We can slide our cross member into position just like so. We'll slide it forward a little bit; right about there is probably good. Now we'll grab our back rail and do the same, just like so. Now we want to take our rear bar here and flip it up on it's side like so; you may need a pair of pliers to assist it. You want to make sure that the holes are closest to the bottom edge, just like that. Now with a second set of hands we'll raise our gooseneck into position. Now when we raise this up we want to make sure it's offset towards the back. You can easily tell if you have the right direction if this spring's off to the driver side. We'll push it up, run our bolt through here, put a lock washer on, and then secure it with a nut. We'll just do everything finger tight right now. Slide the other bolts in for the front, lock washer and nut. Now we'll take our 1/2 inch by 2 inch long bolts, a lock washer, and a flat washer; we'll need 4 set up like this. Now we'll bolt our center section of our gooseneck to our rear rail, again 00:08:43 those bolts that we just set up. Let's get them started by hand. There's 1, we'll put the other 3 in now. Now we'll take our large bolts, our large lock washer, a large flat washer; we'll get all 4 of those set up and we'll loosely install our side plates now. Start with our driver side. We'll slide it between the 2 rails that we installed. We'll install our hardware in the existing holes in the frame. We'll do the same on the other side. Now on our driver side we'll bolt our front rail to our side rail using inch and 1/2 long bolt, flat washer, lock washer, then a nut. Repeat the same process on the passenger side. Now we'll take a bolt, lock washer, and a flat washer, so we'll bolt our side rail in the frame to our rear rail. You may need to adjust the height of the rail a little bit to get the bolt holes to line up. Let's get these started by hand, and we'll go do the other side. Once we've got them all started we can snug them down with a wrench. You can use a 3/4 inch wrench or 19 millimeter for this. Now we'll tighten all our bolts on our center section to our rail. This one here above the fuel tank is kind of difficult to get to. You need to put a wrench on the bolt and either use a ratchet or another wrench to tighten it up. Now that we have our gooseneck center section tightened to both of our rails in the front and rear, we need to take a measurement from our side plate to our forward cross member here to make sure everything is square. Right at about 4 inches; we'll go double check the other side to see where we're at. You can see on this side we're also at 4 inches. With our 2 measurements being the same at 4 inches we can now tighten down our side plate bolts here with a 24 millimeter socket. Now we'll torque all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions, beginning with our rails first. Now we'll torque all the ones underneath. Now that our rails are torqued fully to our side plates on the frame here and the center section with our gooseneck, we'll torque our side rails right here on the frame to the frame. Now we'll take our ball release handle, we'll slide it to the slot in the driver side frame. We'll go underneath and attach it to the gooseneck. We'll attach the rod using a carriage bolt that's included to this hole, and I'll put the nut on the backside that's included. We'll tighten it down with a 13 millimeter socket and ratchet. Now we need to drill 4 pilot holes for our safety chains loops. 1 here, here, and 2 here above the exhaust. Now that our pilot holes are drilled we can enlarge them to a 1/2 inch diameter. Now we'll drop down our loops and you can see they slide up and down nice and easily. Now we can go underneath and install our hardware for them. Now we'll take our springs, we'll have the pointed end facing down, push it over our bolt, and we'll install 1 of our nuts. Another spring, and a nut. Now we'll tighten these nuts down until they're flush with the end of the bolt. That completes our installation of the B&W Turnover Ball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch with Custom Installation Kit, part number BWGNRK1016 on our 2016 GMC Sierra 3500.
