How to Install the CIPA Clip-On Universal Fit Towing Mirrors on a 2019 Subaru Outback Wagon

Rob: Hey, everybody. It's Rob here at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the CIPA universal clip-on towing mirror on our 2019 Subaru Outback wagon. A towing mirror is going to help us out whenever we're towing a trailer, like we have our popup here. And really, it's not that bad. Whenever you're towing a trailer, you can typically get down the road.

You may have to stick your head out the window a few times, but typically, when we're going down the highway and we need to change lanes, since we've added so much to the back of our Outback, we really need to look over and see what's back there. And our towing mirror is definitely going to give us that wider field of view so we can see what's in that lane over and have the confidence to get down the road. Here I am at the back of my trailer, and you can clearly see me in the mirror. But the problem comes up when I step away. You're going to lose track of me. But that's where a towing mirror is definitely going to help out.

Again, it's going to give us that wider field of view so we can see what's beyond our factory mirror and make sure it's safe to change lanes. Or maybe, we're just pulling up at the campground and parking our trailer. Either way, having that wider field of view is definitely going to give us the confidence to get down the road safely and make sure that everyone knows what's going on around us. Our towing mirror is going to have a fully adjustable mirror, so that way, we can get that angle we need when we're going down the road.I have it in the upright position so we can have a nice tall view, but if you really want a wide angle view, you can actually rotate the mirror to the side and get even farther out. You can see, we are adding a little bit to the outside of our Subaru.

It's nothing crazy, but we don't always have that extra space. So, it'd be nice to fold our mirrors in without having to remove the towing mirror. I do want to let you know, we do have a little bit of contact right here at the bottom on the chrome trim, but we can still get the mirror to fold in pretty much all the way without making any contact. And again, if you're extremely careful as you fold it in, it won't actually touch. It'll just get really close. The mirror's going to be held on by these rubber straps, so it's going to do a really good job of holding everything in place and protecting the paint on our Outback because the rubber, we're not going to have to worry about any kind of scratches or abrasions.

The thing I really like about it is even with the additional towing mirror in place, we still have the function of all the factory settings on our Outback. We're still going to be able to see and use that factory turn signal and be able to have full adjustments of our factory mirror, so we don't have to worry about it interfering, so we can still adjust them to get that perfect viewing angle. One of the best features that I think is the fact that our mirror has a universal design. If you have more than one vehicle you tow within your family, chances are this might fit that as well. I know a lot of people just like having that towing mirror on the driver's side, and that's awesome. Our mirror does come in a quantity of one, but if you do want one for each side, it does also come as a set. It really just depends on if you want mirrors on both sides. You can keep an eye on your trailer all the way around or you're just one of those people that need it on the driver's side.To get our mirrors in place, it's a really simple, easy process. You just want to adjust that hinge here to where the arms are going to fit around the mirror. And we pay attention to these tabs here. That little notch is going to fit in between the mirror housing and the mirror glass. So, we'll just open up the arms. And typically, I like to get the bottom in place just so it has somewhere to sit. We'll just push those tabs to where they're resting in place. Bring the other arm down. Then, you can just hold it in place with our hand. We can grab the strap on the back side and make sure you go around the mirror, and we just want to hook it on top.If you need to tighten or loosen the strap, just feed it through whichever way, shorten it, tighten it up, lengthen it to loosen it up. It's a good idea to give it a quick shake. If you need to, you can adjust the straps for a little bit tighter, a little bit looser. Just want to make sure that mirror's not going to be moving around on you. And that's all there is to it. Just a matter of adjusting the mirror to get that perfect angle for our trailer, and we're ready to hit the road. But again, I'm Rob here at etrailer.com, and that'll finish up your look at the CIPA universal clip-on towing mirror on our 2019 Subaru Outback wagon.
