Review of the Curt 4 Bike Platform Rack on a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Speaker 1: Today on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee we're going to be doing test fit on the Curt Platform Style 4 Bike Rack. That's part number C18087. I've already got it loaded up just to give you a good idea of what it looks like and how it's going to hold our four bikes. It actually secures our bikes with a locking, padded frame hook. It puts down-pressure on our bikes into the front and rear cradles. One of its best features is it has the ability to tilt away with all bikes loaded, so we can gain access to our rear hatch. First thing we want to do is pull out the large pin, it'll rest down on the safety pin.

Once we've done that we can pull out the smaller pin. Then we can tilt it away like so, until it rests. As you can see we've got plenty of room to remove any cargo, gear, groceries, anything we might have with us on our trip. Now let's go ahead and take the bike off. It's the perfect time to show you one of its best features. We'll start by removing the pin and clip from the center mast here at the bottom.

Once we've done that we can push in on our button to raise up our hook, and then we can fold it out of our way. This is going to allow us to easily remove our bike. With it in this position let's go ahead and grab a few measurements.Overall to the Jeep Grand Cherokee we've added about 52". For our closest point we've got about 11". At the very back our ground clearance is about 27-1/2".

If we we're to remove the extension our overall length would be about 31". Our ground clearance would be about 27". Now this bike rack does have two stowable options. I'll show you them both. The first one, we'll need to remove the pin and clip on the second mast, lower it down just the same, and we'll want to reinsert those pins and clips to lock them in place. Then we can remove the large pin and clip and we'll fold it up against our jeep.

Once we get to the top we can reinsert it to lock it in place. Now this would be ideal for pulling in a garage or in a tight parking spot. With it in this position I'll give you a few more measurements. Overall we've got about 18" to the rear. For our space between, or closest point, we're looking at about 7". Our ground clearance is about 18" from the underside of our shank. For the second stowable option we'll need to make sure that both center masts are locked in the upright position just as you see them here. This time we're going to fold up the arms. To do that we'll pull out the pins and clips, we'll fold them up, and then reinsert them, locking them in place. Then we can repeat the same process for the front too. With the rack arms folded up, as you can see we can easily store it in a corner of our garage, our basement, or even in our closet. It includes an anti-rattle bolt and clip. The nice thing about the anti-rattle bolt is it's going to help reduce all that play, and all that rattle within our receiver tube and our bike rack to make a nice solid ride for our bikes. So, as you can see I'm shaking the whole vehicle here and there's no rattle. Here on our test course let's first go into our slalom. This is going to show side to side action such as going around corners or evasive maneuvering. Then onto our solid speed bumps. This is going to show an up and down action, such as pulling in and out of a driveway, or out of a parking lot. Then finally onto our alternating speed bumps. This is going to show a twisting action, such as going over potholes or uneven pavement. That's going to complete our test fit of the Curt Platform Style 4 Bike Rack, part number C18087, on our 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Did not show how to convert to 2 bike carrier only. I was told this is possible. Sometimes I need 4 and most times only 2 bikes. Also did not see anything about weight of carrier.

The Curt 4 Bike Rack # C18087 can indeed be converted to a 2-bike rack by simply removing the outer platform piece. The carrier has a total weight of about 86 pounds.

@ChrisR It would be nice if they showed that feature in video. What is weight of the carrier after removing outer platform. Looking

@BillG With the outer platform removed (and it's just in its 2-bike configuration) the rack weighs about 50 pounds.
