Review of the Curt Folding Aluminum Cargo Carrier on a 2015 Mazda CX-5

Today on our 2015 Mazda CX5, we're going to be test-fitting the 19" by 60" CURT Cargo Carrier. It's designed for use with 2" hitches and it offers a 500 lb weight capacity. Part number is C18100. To begin our test-fit, we need to slide the shank of the carrier into the receiver tube of our hitch. As we do this, we'll look through the pinhole there, see when we get our holes lined up. We're then going to take a standard pin, slide that through and secure it with a clip.

Now our cargo carrier is going to offer about 9 1/2" worth of ground clearance. Closest point of the carrier to the back of our vehicle is going to be here and that's about 2 1/4" away. And overall, we've added about 7" to the total length of the CX5. Here at the base of the rack we've got a pin and clip. We're going to pull this and that will allow us to tilt it away from our vehicle down into the platform or loading position.

We'll then reinsert the pin in the new hole there to hold it in this position. Get another set of measurements here. Looks like we've got about 11" worth of ground clearance here at the rear. The closest point's now moved back. It's about 7 1/2" away. And overall, we've got about 26 1/2" that we've added to the length of our Mazda.

With opening the rear hatch it's quite a ways away, but it does break over the plane of our carrier. It's about 23 1/2" where it breaks over. As you can see, the dual exhaust setup on the Mazda here does point back towards our carrier. I want to take a measurement, just to see how far away that is. It's about 14 1/4" inches away.

Just keep that in mind if you're transporting any kind of heat sensitive materials or anything like that. All we've got left to do is hit the road. We're going to take it out on the slalom course, the alternating bumps, and the solid bumps to really give you a real-world perspective of how it operates. And that'll complete today's test fit of the CURT 19" by 60" Cargo Carrier. Part number is C18100 and it's on our 2015 Mazda CX5. .
