How to Install the Derale Series 8000 Plate-Fin Transmission Cooler Kit on a 2014 Honda Odyssey

Today in our 2014 Honda Odyssey we're going to take a look at and also show you how to install the Derale Series 8000 Plate Fin Transmission Cooler Kit with barb inlets. This is a class three efficient type cooler. Part number is D13503.Now this is what your cooler is going to look like installed. This being an auxiliary cooler, it's made to maintain the temperature of your transmission fluid. In this Odyssey at the bottom of the radiator there's a factory transmission cooler built in, so we're just adding this to that essentially.Run our lines down, make our connection. Our fluid's gonna come in one side and it goes through those fins.

You can see in each of those areas that fluid's slowly gonna make it's way over. These additional cooling fins help to dissipate that heat, so when you're hauling or you have a heavy load, putting extra pressure and extra strain on your transmission, this keeps everything running nice and cool. Basically that's going to help to extend the life of that transmission and prevent it from overheating on you.To get our cooler installed we're going to be going in behind the fascia panel here. We're gonna take a few parts off as we go. We're going to start with this upper kind of radiator cover here, or our threshold panel.

We've got our air intake tube here to take off. This has a couple of push pin fasteners on it. That's really what this whole upper portion is held in place with. Just want to pop up the middle section of it. Then generally the whole thing will just come out with it.

And the one here we're going to pull up for this. It'll just lift up. This will be a pressure fitting here.Now you see our panel here is already a little loose from taking those out. Just take the rest of them out and we'll set it aside to put back in later.Now if we raise on the back, you want to slide it back just a little bit to get this lip out. Once that's out, we'll just slide that off forward.Next we're gonna remove the two bolts.

We've got one here, one in the same spot on the other side. We'll use a 10 millimeter. Now where the area of your fascia meets the underside here, we need to start taking this loose. You can see that little seam there. For the bolts we're gonna use a 10 millimeter socket and the other ones are going to be pushpin fasteners.Now we're going to come into our wheel well area. This is our driver's side. There's a little screw here and also one below it here that we're going to remove.Now with the help of an extra set of hands we're going to start pulling the fascia off. We're going to work from the outside edge here and you're just going to pop the clips over and around.Check in behind. You want to make sure you don't have any wiring or anything connected to the front. As long as you don't, we'll set it aside.Now we'll pull off this small cover here. We're going to remove the push pin fasteners is basically how it's held in, but you will have 1 10 millimeter bolt on each outside edge here to take out.Now with that taken apart upfront we need to warm up the transmission. That's going to help us determine which of the two lines that we need to use. We want to use the return line or the line coming back to the transmission. So you'll just start up the vehicle. I'm gonna put it in gear and have our parking brake set, and also our foot on the brake. We just want to let that cycle. You can give it just a little bit of gas if you want to, and basically what we want to force fluid to circulate.Now generally after about 10 seconds, we'll have what we need. We'll go down to check the two lines.Now we just check the temperature on both the lines. This one's up over 90. This one's about 83, so we'll use the cooler of the two lines. That's going to be our guy.Now just so you have an idea, these lines are located just in front of this big cross member. This is your recovery hook underneath the front of the vehicle. Going to be right up in that area.Now we're going to decide on our mounting location. We're going to be doing it right here in front of the . This is the condenser coil. Place it on there, something like that. We've got four holes on each tab to pick from. I'm going to use the ones further on the outside. I just want to make sure that my upper and lower holes are both going to allow me to slide these through the fins. Let me see, that's how we're going to attach it. It looks like right there we're in good shape. So it's time to mark these so we know where we're coming back to.You can see we've placed one of our keepers through that cooler. Just slide one of those foam pads right down and on there, just like that. It's going to give us some insulation between that.Now I'm just going to mock this up pretty much for now and see how that slides through there. They're pretty long, so once you have your push through established, you can pull that back out and shorten this up some. We'll get more access behind there in just a second.Got a couple 10 millimeter bolts. One here and one here we're going to take out. Just pop those off and you see we can lean that out a little bit.Now we've got this keeper to go in the back. I'm going to slide that on, but I'm not going to slide it all the way tight at this point. I just want this to hold the position for us for now while we get our lines routed.Now the way those lines are set up back there, they've got a little loop in it basically. So what we're gonna do is we're going to take our one four foot piece of 11/32nd, we're going to connect it to this side of our cooler and we're going to go around this way to get to that line.The other line, we're going to go over this way with it. That way we're coming into that connection at the right angle. It's going to take us about another four foot to go around that way. So it's an 11/32nd piece of hose, inside diameter. Just want to be sure that's the size you get. We also have it available on our website. You're going to need about an additional four foot of it though, and that'll give you a little bit of excess.We're gonna slide one of those pieces up on each barb. We want to get it all the way up on there and you could lubricate this with a little bit of transmission fluid if you want. You just want to make sure you're using fluid compatible with your Honda's transmission though.Okay. Now once those hoses are in place, we're going to put our hose clamps on. You want to use a quarter inch bit driver to do it, or a quarter inch socket for that matter would work fine. We're going to get them nice and secure. We don't need to over tighten them, but we do want to compress that rubber, make sure it's holding on there properly, and these needed to be well up past those barbs that stuck off of those fittings for sure.Now once we have our lines configured and ran, let's just get our two remaining fasteners in and we can get those cinched down. That's how everything's going to look seated down in behind there. With that extra tag in clipped off it gives you a nice, neat look.Now we'll just take our bracket, we want to place that back over the top there and get our bolt reinstalled. We'll do that on both sides. We'll be ready to hook up those lines down below.Now on the passenger side, we're going to route our hose basically right along with this hard line that you see here. A little hole here in the plastic that we'll be able to go through.Now for the passenger side we're going to be going right through here and if you'll feel up from the backside there's a little rectangular shaped piece of plastic. It's about right here. We're going to trim a little hole through that. There's not a big gap in here already, so we're going to make just a little notch just large enough for our hose to come through.All right. Now we'll just run our hose, right through there. Now we've got our two hoses down. You'll notice we went right over the radiator hose right here. This is going to be connected to this side so we're gonna leave a little bit of extra, but get a nice clean cut there on the end. Like that, give us plenty of length there.This one is going to be connected right here to this fitting, so let's make sure we have enough to get over there and make that connection. You can see the two clamps that are on there. We want to use a pair of pliers, squeeze the tabs together, and then slide those towards the middle of the hose, that'll give us some room. Like that. Same thing on this one. Just like that.Now on each one of our hoses we want to put our hose clamps on. I'm gonna keep them well back from the end for now, but I do want to take most of the slack out of it. When we're messing with that hose it's not going to slide off there. We can loosen it once we get our hose in place.All right. On this side, we're going to separate. Just gonna gently cut through there. I'm not trying to push all the way into that steel line.All right. So we'll get that trimmed back which should allow us to slip it off there.Now as soon as we separate that, we're going to have fluid that comes out. You see it's already starting to drip there a little bit so be ready for that. Have something down on the ground to catch it.Now it'll just take us a little bit of time and need to get this hose worked back up and on there so we can get our clamp in place.Now we'll do the same thing for our other side there, get it separated and reconnected. But this time, of course, we need to use their other hose.Now we've got everything installed, but we still need to check for leaks. We're going to do that before we get our fascia on. We want to check both the connection points on the cooler and also both of them on our lines. To do that, essentially you're just going to let the car run with your foot on the brake and it in gear. Let that fluid cycle. See what you have.All right. We've checked all four of our connections. We don't have any leaks, anything like that to worry about, so at this point just put that fascia back on in the same order that you removed it. You do want to check your fluid level though. With the hoses we have and the cooler it's going to take up a little bit of fluid. There's a little more room in this system, so be sure to tap that back off.Now with everything put back together that completes our installation of the Derale Series 8000 Plate Fin Transmission Cooler on our 2014 Honda Odyssey.
