How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2016 GMC Terrain

Hi there Terrain owners, today in your 2016 GMC Terrain, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install to conscious T-One factory vehicle wiring harness. Your trailer wiring isn't going to be located here on the outside, instead it's protected from the elements by being stored on the inside. You'll find your connector underneath your cover, where you store your spare tire, and it's stored right here. Whenever you're ready to use it, you can simply unwind it, drape it over the back, making sure you avoid the striker here in the middle, and it'll pinch between our weatherstripping, which will hold it in place, but won't cause any damage to our wiring. We'll close our cover and then shut our lift gate. Here at the end, we have our standard four-pole flat trailer connector. This is going to provide us our left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps, keeping us DOT compliant in all states.

This is a custom fit wiring harness, it's designed to plug directly into the factory tow package connector on your Terrain, so it will use your Terrain's existing trailer wiring. What's nice about this, since your vehicle already has that existing wiring, it also has existing circuit protection on it. So if you had any faults on your trailer that would cause an issue with the circuitry here, there's a fuse on your vehicle that is for your trailer, that would open that you can just replace after you fixed your trailer, to get you back up and running again. While it's outside the vehicle, we have a dust cap that will keep out any dirt moisture, to help prevent against corrosion, ensure a long lasting connection. And if you're leaving it outside, let's say maybe you just don't hook your trailer and you're heading over to another one, you can keep it up off the road, using the dust cap to secure it to the loop for your safety chain. When we're all done, we can just open up our cover, wind it back up, and store it in the small opening here on the side. We'll begin our installation at the back of the vehicle.

If we lift up on our spare tire cover, we'll find our factory tow package connector located in the slot over here on the side, on the driver's side. We'll have a little module here and it's just back on the far rear wall. It's a little difficult to see, you will to get down low to find it, but it's the great connector located there. Our factory tow package connector will plug directly into it, so we're going to just going to go ahead and take the rubber band off, stretch our wire out, and we'll reach in and just plug this directly in. It is a little tight to get your hand in there, but if you just feel you can line the two connectors up and then they just push together, you'll hear them click. Just like that.

And your installation at this point is complete. All we need to do now is just plug into our trailer and test it out. This is designed to stay inside the vehicle. So what you will do is you'll drape it down over the back, you want to make sure you avoid the striker here in the middle. You can give yourself as much length of cord that you need to hang out, and then when you shut the door, it'll pinch it between our weatherstripping, which will hold it in place, but it won't cause any damage to our wiring.

If you'd rather use a tester, you can use one like we have here, which you can purchase here at etrailer.com.You want to make sure you had your left turn signal, right turn signal, tail lamps, and brake lamps. With everything tested out and working properly, if you're not going to be towing your trailer right now, you can just fold it up and store it in the open slot here on the side, where it's out of sight. And I like to use the dust cap on the connector to hold my wiring together. You can just wrap it around there, clip it on, store it in there, and you're all set. And that completes our installation of the conscious T-One factory vehicle wiring harness on our 2016 GMC Terrain.
