How to Install the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch on a 2016 Ford E-Series Cutaway

Hey everybody, my name is Ryan and here at etrailer, we install, test, fit and review a lot of different parts. That way we can try to answer any questions those of you might have. And that's exactly what we're doing here today on our 2016 Ford E-Series Cutaway. We're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install the Draw-Tite Front Mount Trailer Hitch Receiver. With RVing becoming more and more popular these days, people realize really quick that you run out of space and storage room faster than you would think. So a lot of times, especially nowadays people that have an RV tend to flat tow or pull their vehicle behind it, or maybe you're using another carrier back there to haul around a generator and so on.

Well, that's kind of it for extra space and that's where the Front Mount Hitch will come into play.This will allow you to use other accessories, maybe a spare tire carrier because you lost the one on the back, whenever you set up your accessory back there. Or maybe even a bike rack, that seems like it's very popular. People have their accessories back there and no place for their bikes. So really cool option. You can throw on your bike rack in here and take your bikes down the road that way.

And that's really not it, there's many different purposes you can use to get your extra cargo out from inside of your motor home here on the outside, making it a lot more comfortable for your family and friends.You can also use the Front Mount Hitch to mount up a wench. And that might sound strange. But if you think about it after talking to a lot of our customers that come here to the shop, it's becoming really popular actually to kind of camp off the grid, if you will. Kind of go into the spots where no one else likes to go, and a lot of times the way in and out, isn't a cakewalk. Lot of times, it's very rough terrain.

So it could be better safe than sorry. Have a winch on the front of your motorhome. That way, if you we're to get hung up, it would at least have some hope being able to pull yourself out.So our hitch is going to have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening and a reinforced collar for extra strength. It's going to have that standard five eight size pinhole. Now keep in mind a pin and clip does not come included, but if you need one, you can pick it up here at etrailer.

We're going to have a smaller hole in front of our pinhole, and that's going to be there to use a J-pin device and more or less what that does is it acts as a stabilization device. That's going to eliminate any slapper play here in your hitch and the connection point. That way, whatever accessory you install on here, won't bounce around and make a lot of noise. You can find that right here at etrailer as well.So the hitch is going to have a 500 pound vertical load limit, and that's going to be the amount of weight that's pushing down on the hitch. So, relatively high number should be able to use pretty much any size bike rack, just to give you an example. It's going to have a 9,000 pound wind pole. So what that means, if you're using a winch, that's the amount, that that winch is going to be able to pull, without maxing out our hitch. It's going to have a 5,000 pound maximum gross trailer weight rating. So if you we're to put a ball mount in here and maybe just move a trailer around the parking lot or something like that, to get it situated better, the hitch can handle a trailer up to 5,000 pounds and that includes everything that's on it, plus the weight of the trailer itself.Now I'm going to give you a couple of measurements and you can use these to help figure out which hitch-mounted accessories will work best. From the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening, that's going to be about 17 inches. And from the center of the hitch pin hole to the very edge of our front bumper, that's going to be about one inch. So at the end of the day, a great tool to have on the front of your RV. It's going to allow you to free up some space on the inside and make life a little bit more comfortable all while being able to use whatever accessory you want out here, making everything more enjoyable. Now, as far as the installation goes, really not too bad, there's a little drilling involved, but everything's easy to get to and don't really take a whole lot of time.Speaking of which let's go ahead and put that on together now. To begin our installation, we're going to be working right under the front of our motorhome. Now we have ours on a lift today. That way we can just see what we're doing a little bit better, but I just wanted to mention that you don't need to get your motorhome this high off the ground, to get the hitch installed. So first things first, we need to remove the splash shield. So we're going to have a total of four bolts, one here, and one just like it in the exact same spot on the other side. And then two bolts here in the center. So I'm going to use an eight millimeter socket to pull those out.So once we have those removed, we can kind of grab that panel, mark it down and set it off to the side. If you move to the bottom of our frame rail, we're going to see some holes and we want to focus on this one here, that's closest to the front of our vehicle. And what we need to do is enlarge that. That way it'll be big enough for our hardware to pass through which eventually is going to hold our hitch into place. I do want to mention as well, from this point on, anything we do to this side of our vehicle, we're also going to do to the other side, because it'll be set up the exact same way. That being said, I'll take my drill bit and enlarge the hole.What I do suggest doing, since we have some bare metal now that we enlarged that hole, just to take some spray paint and give it a good coating. That way it'll protect that metal from any rust or corrosion in the future. Now what we can do is loosen up our front bumper. Now we don't want to completely remove the bumper, but the reason that we're loosening it up, is so at the end of our frame rail here, there will be a small gap and we'll be able to get our hardware up inside of the frame rail. With that being said, to do that, we're going to have one nut on each side of our frame rail. So we'll have this one here and one just like it over here on this side. I'll use a 21 millimeter socket to loosen it up and I'm going to back it off pretty much all the way. I'll just leave a few threads.Now we can go ahead and get our hardware inside of the frame rail. Each side of the frame, we're going to have two attachment points. We're going to be using the hole that we enlarged, as well as this oval-shaped one here. And the way we're going to get our hardware in is by using a fish wire. We're going to put the coil in through this opening. And that's going to come out of the frame here, in between the bumper and that's why we loosen the bumper up there. What I like to do is kind of just bend the pull wire, makes it a little easier to drop out. We'll take the coiled end, push it back, until it drops out there. And what we're going to do is take a spacer block, slide that over and a carriage bolt, thread that carriage bolt onto the pull wire and feed everything up inside of the frame rail, and then we're to pull it and get it to drop down. All of the attachment points, we're going to use that same hardware combination. So I'll just repeat that same process to get the hardware and this attachment point as well.Now, before we put our hitch up, I think it'd be a good idea to re-secure our bumper while we have all this space. Now, when you loosen your bumper up, it is going to drop down a little bit. So let's get this nut out of the way to give you an idea. You can see here, the mark from where the nut originally was. So what I'm going to do is get our nut started. We can kind of hold it back up, where it was originally and tighten it back down.Since our hitch is going to come through the front of our Ford, right here in this general area, we are going to need to remove our license plate bracket, as well as doing a little bit of trimming here. So, on the back side here, we're going to have four clips that are holding our license plate bracket on, these two here in the center. You're going to push up on them and push forward. And then if you look up here in each corner, you're going to have two more clips. So you can take a flat head screwdriver, kind of push up and pull out at the same time. And then we'll be able to work that bracket off. Now we can go ahead and trim the front of our fascia here, according to the diagram and instructions. So I went ahead and measured everything out and drew some lines here, where we're going to cut. This is relatively thin plastic. So you could use a variety of different tools; pair of 10 snips, regular pair of snips, or even a rotary tool like this.Now with an extra set of hands, we can raise the hitch into position. So what you're going to want to do is drop the corresponding pole wires through the holes in the hitch. We'll lift it up. You may have to kind of work the hitch around that portion of the bumper that we trimmed, will sit up flat against our frame. When our hardware drops out, you can remove one of the pull wires, take a conical tooth washer, make sure that the teeth on the washer are to face up towards the hitch. We'll just take a hex nut. And you want to get at least one started on each side, hand tight. That way the hitch will support itself while you work on the rest of them.Now that we have all of our hardware in place and hand tight and come back with a 19 millimeter socket and snug everything down. Don't forget to come back with a torque wrench and tighten down all the hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. So when it comes to the splash guard that we removed, you got a couple of choices. You can leave it removed, or you can trim it and re-install it. We're going to trim ours and put it back on. There's a diagram, the instructions that tells you where to cut. So I marked that out here with this being thin plastic, I'm just going to use a pair of snips to cut that material out.So I went ahead and just loosely installed our splash shield. And I realized it was kind of hitting our hitch a little bit and interfering. So I did trim out maybe a couple more inches on each side, just right around the hitch. With that being said, go ahead and raise it back up into position and get it re-secured. It is kind of a tight fit, just keep that in mind. Something I do want to mention, is the license plate bracket. In our case, our customer does not need one. So we're just not going to re-install it. But if your vehicle does require you to have a front plate, you got a couple choices. You could try to source maybe some type of relocation bracket, or what I would probably do is just move it off to the side a little bit. That actually kind of sits nice and flat, and then just use a couple of screws to secure it down and keep it in place. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the Draw-Tite Front Mount trailer Hitch Receiver on our 2016 Ford E-Series Cutaway.
