How to Install the EcoHitch Hidden Trailer Hitch on a 2015 Honda Fit


Hey, everybody. Ryan here at etrailer. Today, on our 2015 Honda Fit, we're gonna be showing you how to install the EcoHitch trailer hitch receiver. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure this is something that's gonna work for you. So, with these Honda Fits being compact cars, you don't have a ton of space on the inside. So, if you're wanting to carry around your bikes, or maybe a cargo carrier, or something like that on a long trip to free up some space.

You're gonna need a way to use those items. And the EcoHitch is gonna be the answer to that. Out of the ones available for the Fit, in my opinion, this is definitely the best choice. And for a couple of different reasons. The big one being that this is gonna have a two inch by two inch receiver tube opening.

And that's a super common size. And a ton of different accessories are available that will allow you to use them with this particular hitch. The other thing I like about this setup is the appearance, how it's gonna look. And with that said, you kind of get two for one with it. Not only is it gonna be a really clean look.

You know everything's gonna be completely hidden with the exception of the receiver tube opening. But because of that design, it's gonna set up nice and tight against the bottom of our fascia and higher up off the ground. And it sounds like a lot of customers actually kind of run into ground clearance issues when they have their hitch and that makes sense. These Fits don't ride way up in the sky. They're relatively low to the ground.

And with that said, the only thing that's exposed is the receiver tube. Sits up nice and tight, as opposed to some of the other hitches which kind of hang down. And not to mention, the crossbar is gonna be visible and hanging down as well. So, this is gonna give you the most clearance and the best chance for not having to worry about it bottoming out or anything like that. So, around that two inch opening, we're gonna have a reinforced collar for a little bit of extra strength. And I think it kind of gives the hitch more of a complete look as well. It is gonna use that standard 5/8 pin hole. And then keep in mind, a pin and clip does not come included. You can grab one here at etrailer if you need it. And the safety chain openings are pretty small actually. Not really a huge deal though, you're still gonna be able to use the small to moderate size hooks without any issues really. As far as the hitch's weight capacities go, it's gonna have a 300 pound maximum gross tongue weight rating. And that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pushing down on the hitch. So, that's good for those one to three, maybe even four-bike racks. Depending on the weight of the rack and the bikes themselves. Just to kind of give you an example. As far as the maximum gross trailer weight rating goes, that's gonna be 2,000 pounds. And that's gonna be the amount of weight that's pulling on the hitch. So, that's the weight of the trailer plus anything that you might have on it. Do you always like to suggest so, never a bad idea just to grab your Honda's owner's manual. That way, you can make sure your Fit can pull that much weight safely. Now, let's go ahead, take a couple of measurements. And that'll help us figure out which accessories will work out best. We go from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube opening. Looks like we're gonna be right at about 12 1/2 inches. So, if you can find an accessory that has a raised shank, probably better off going with that. That way, it'll set up a little bit higher off the ground. To go from the center of the hitch pin hole to the edge of the rear bumper, that's gonna be right at two inches. And you can use that measurement to figure out that if any folding accessories you might have can be stored in that upright position without hitting the bumper. But with that being said, two inches is a really low number, so chances are pretty good you're not gonna run into any issues there. So, at the end of the day, this would be my pick if I we're to put a hitch on my Honda Fit. It's well worth it compared to some of the other ones. You just get a lot more benefits, like having the larger two inch by two inch opening. It's sitting up higher off the ground. And not to mention, the appearance. It looks really good. Now, as far as the installation goes, it is gonna take a little bit of work. The fascia does need to be removed, but honestly, Honda makes it very easy. Not a whole lot of fasteners. Everything's pretty simple to get to. So, really shouldn't give you a whole lot of issues. Speaking of which, let's go ahead, pull in to the shop and put it on together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna need to remove our fascia. That way, we can put our hitch on behind it. And so, the first thing we're gonna do is move over to our rear wheel wells and pull out some fasteners. So, if we look along this edge, we're gonna have some phillips head fasteners. There should be a total of four. One here, here, here and there. In our case, one is missing. So, we're not gonna worry about that. But go ahead and grab my bit. And get those removed. I wanna mention, from this point on, anything we do to one side of our vehicle, also gonna repeat to the other side cause it will be set up the same way. Now, if we move to the bottom edge of our fascia, we're gonna have some push pin fasteners that we need to pull out. We're gonna have one here holding on our mud flap. So, you can take a trim to or even a flathead screwdriver. Gonna work that fastener out. Mud flap removed. We'll set this aside. And that was actually covering another one up. We'll do the same thing. Then, we'll just work our way across here. One there and a few in the center. Sometimes these can be kind of tricky to get out with all the dirt and everything piled up in there. Just take your time with it. So, now if you open up your rear hatch and look right here, we're gonna have two more fasteners. And we're gonna remove those using a five millimeter hex head allen key. Now, with an extra set of hands, we can actually remove our fascia. I went ahead and put some painter's tape here along the edge just to prevent any accidental scratching. What you're gonna do is start from the side. Kind of carefully pull out towards you to release the clips. And there's kind of a trick if they get hung up, you can take a small flathead screwdriver or something like that to help push down on them. A little tricky to see. Once I get this kind of pulled off though, we'll take a better look at them. So, here's the clips I mentioned. So, these are gonna go over these pieces. And so, what I was doing is pulling out on the fascia and just pushing down on that clip, and that usually is enough to get everything released. So, I'll just continue to work my way up. Looks like we have one more here in the corner. And carefully pull it back. There may be some wiring or something that we need to disconnect. In our case, there's not. So, let's take our fascia and set it off to the side. Now we can go ahead and remove our bumper beam. Wanna mention, don't worry about this wiring. This is just from a motorhome flat tow setup they installed in the past, so just ignore that. But to get our bumper beam off on each side of it, we're gonna have two 12 millimeter fasteners here on the bottom and then one just like this on the top. So, go ahead grab our socket and pull those off. I went ahead and already got the other side removed. And to actually get our beam off, you're gonna have to do is just kind of lift up a little bit and then pull straight back. So now, with our bumper beam removed, we need to modify it just a little bit. On the back of it, we're gonna have these little keeper hooks, and we need to push those up. And in our case, you have the bumper beam upside down. So, just as a reference, this edge here with the two holes is the bottom. This is the top. So, the hook needs to go this way. So, I'm just gonna take a hammer. Just kind of straighten them out just like that. Clean out our attachment points. And we're just gonna be using the factory holes here that is holding our bumper beam on. Could spray these out with some penetrating oil or something like that. And then, just take a tube brush. Clean out the threads. Get rid all that old grime in there. And what we're gonna do for the two bottom holes is you wanna take one of your bolts and a split lock washer. Put the split lock washer over it and a flat washer. All right. And then, we're gonna take these and thread them in this way. So, I'll get both of these started as flat as I can by hand. And then, we'll come back and snug them up a little bit. Since you got both of them in there like that, we can grab our wrench. And I'm using a 13 millimeter. We just wanna snug these up. So, you don't need them crazy tight. If you see the split lock washer, what we're looking for is for that just to kind of get crushed and turned flat. Don't take much really just with a wrench like this. Once it kind of stops, give it a little extra and that's all you really need. So now, we can kind of go over how our hitch is gonna work. So, you can lay it out like so. And the holes in the hitch are gonna line up with the holes in our bumper beam. So, you're gonna take it. Kind of lay it on the hitch. And then, we're able to lift this up as a whole assembly and get it on the back of our vehicle. Now with an extra set of hands, we can take our hitch and bumper beam assembly, and get it into position. Then, I'm gonna start this bolt here on the top. You're just gonna take a bolt, split lock washer and a flat washer. We're gonna get at least one going on each side hand tight. That way, everything will support itself while we work on the rest of the hardware. For the bottom two attachment points, you're gonna take a flat washer, another split lock washer, and a nut. Once all of your hardware is in place and hand tight, you can come back with a 13 millimeter socket and snug it all down. Now, we need to make sure and come back with a torque wrench and tighten down all of our hardware to the amount specified in the instructions. Trim out the bottom portion of our fascia. That way, it'll fit nicely around the hitch. There's a diagram with some measurements and instructions, and you can just follow that which I have done. So, it kind of starts out wider at the bottom and tapers up a little bit. So, I marked that out. With this being pretty thin plastic, I'm just gonna use a pair of snips to cut this out. You could also use a sharp utility knife or general tool, something like that. Whatever you find works best. They do give you a piece of trim or molding. That way, you can put it around the cut edge. And really help clean up the install look. Now from past experience, I find this much easier to do before you put the fascia back on the vehicle. So, that's what I did. Really nothing to it. Mold it to the cut. Trim off any extra that may be hanging out below. And with that done, now we can reinstall our fascia. Our fascia will just go back on the opposite way that we removed it. Just kind of work it into position. We'll be able to kind of snap it back in place. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the EcoHitch trailer hitch receiver on our 2015 Honda Fit..
