Review of the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top Trunk Bike Racks on a 2014 Toyota Prius v

Evangeline: Hi, everyone. It's Evengeline here at and today we are looking at our Hollywood racks over the top trunk mounted bike rack here on our 2014 Toyota Prius V. So this is a great bike rack if you are looking for something that is very versatile. This is designed to work with your SUVs, your hatchbacks kind of like what we have here, and really most vehicles that have a lip or a spoiler here on the top. So if you have a need for a bike rack for your different types of vehicles, this is a great option. What we have here is the two bike version, but it also comes in a three bike version.

It's a little bit longer. It also has a weight capacity of 35 pounds per bike. Although pro tip here is that I recommend loading it up with the heaviest bike closest to the car and the lighter bike towards the end.It also comes with a nice integrated safety strap here, which you can use to wrap around your front wheels or your handlebars if you find that the sway is a little bit too much for your ride. The way our bike is mounted is by one, two, three straps. So two straps on the top tube, and one strap down here on the down tube just to have that anti-sway effect.

So when I want to take off my bike, I either move these straps and they're nice rubber solid strap, takes a little bit of effort to remove, but that's also good because it shows how tightly they're securing your bike. And with the straps removed, we can then lift it up and through the bike racks arms, and you are ready to go on a bike ride. When your bike is off, I like to put the straps back just so that they're not flopping around while I am driving around. Now, while we are here, let's take a look at the cradles themselves. So you can see how they have some grooves for your brake lines on your bike, and you have this nice rubber strap that goes around it. These also can pivot around a little bit, just so that you can get the best fit for your bike.

Now let's take some measurements when you do have a bike rack on your vehicle, some length is added to the back of it. So from our back bumper of our Prius V to the back of the bike rack, right by these nice reflectors, it sits at 23 inches long. Now, if you have the three bikes version, that will be a little bit longer, just something to keep in mind when you are backing into your garage or parking in a tight spot. Hollywood racks uses an inter locking knob system here. So what you need to do to adjust the bike rack is to move these levers up, and that releases the knob that allows you to move things up and down.In this case, this will allow us to fold the arms down.

So it doesn't take up so much space. You can see here, I have it a little bit loosened, so you can see how it has interlocking teeth that allow you to adjust the bike racks' arms for pieces and then lock them back into place. So with the arms folded down, you can see how it definitely is not as large or as long as it was with the arms up. Let's see exactly how much length we save. In this position from our back bumper to the end of the bike rack is at nine and a quarter inches so that's a big difference. You definitely want it in this position if you're just driving around town. My favorite part about this design is how it has this over the top spoiler straps so that way it goes all the way up, and then it hooks straight to the top of your hatch. That way you don't have any pressure leaning on your spoiler or the lip of your car. And then we also have two straps here on the sides. So these just hook into the side of our door. Then we have two straps here at the bottom that hook underneath our door. As for what actually comes in contact with our vehicle. We have two foam pads here at the bottom, and this is resting on our bumper. Then we have two foam pads here that is supported on our rear window. Now note when you do attach this, please wipe down or clean your car before doing so. So, one, that they don't have any dust underneath them giving them the best support and, two, just to reduce the scratches and scuffs you might accidentally make on your vehicle with this bike rack. Please note, when you are using this bike rack, though, you won't be able to use your rear windshield wiper. Also, you won't be able to open up your hatch. Now, some accessories you can pick up along with this bike rack is if you have women's bikes or alternate frame bikes, you can pick up a frame adapter bar for your bikes to use with this. Also, you can get a separate cable lock in order to secure your bikes and your bike rack. Just to keep everything safe. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action. This simulates turning corners or evasively maneuvering. Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage, or driveway. Evangeline: My final thoughts about this bike rack is I do love how it allows you to carry your bikes along even if you don't have a hitch, or if you have a class one hitch and you can only carry up max of two bikes. With a three bike version, your problems are solved. Now it also is nice since it has that over the top spoiler design. So it works well with our Prius V here that has the lip, which is great. Now what I didn't like so much was how I could not use my rear windshield wiper and I couldn't open up my hatch, but I can still carry around my bikes. So it really depends on what you are looking for. I recommend checking out our fit guide just to make sure you get the right bike rack for your vehicle.
