How to Install a Trailer Wiring Harness on a 2006 Dodge Ram Pickup

All right. Today, on our 2006 Dodge Ram pick up, we'll be installing the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel Gooseneck 90 Degree Wiring Harness with a 7 Pole Plug, Part Number HM42137. To start off, we'll get in the bed of the truck and we'll go ahead and find a location for our 7 pole connector. This is largely a personal preference. In this case, we're going to go ahead and mount it towards the tailgate. Once we're satisfied with our location, we'll go ahead and drill out the quarter inch pilot hole. Then, we'll go back at it with the hole saw.

Typically, one and eighth inch hole saw will work just fine. With our hole cut, we'll go ahead and take the end of a harness with the 2 connection points. We'll go ahead and run it through the hole and let it fall out the bottom. With our other end of the wire, with a single socket, we'll go ahead and apply some dielectric grease that comes with the kit, to the connection points. Then, we'll plug it into the 7 pole connector. We'll push 2 together until they click.

Then we can go ahead and push the 7 pole connector into the bed of a truck. From there, we can go ahead and attach it to the sheet metal. The kit does come with 4 screws and 4 flat washers. Put the flat washers on the screws and they're self tapping, so let's go ahead and drill them into the sheet metal on the truck. A quarter inch nut driver will work for this purpose. All right, we're done with the inside of the bed, we'll go ahead and go underneath the truck and go to the 7 pole connector underneath.

The 7 pole connector is located by the bumper, we'll go ahead and disconnect it. There's a small tab that you have to push down and you can go ahead and pull it apart. Once we have the tube pulled apart, we'll go ahead and take the 2 ends for our new cable and plug them between the factory wire harness and the 7 pole connector. Once again, we'll go ahead and add some dielectric grease to the contacts, and then we'll go ahead and reassemble the 2 ends going to the 7 pole connector and to the rest of our wiring harness in the truck. Next, we'll go ahead and work for a white wire at the ring terminal. We need to attach that to the frame of a truck. To do that, we're going to be using a number 14 screw that uses a three eighths head nut driver.

This self-tacking screw does not come with the kit. You'll have to get that separately. With our ground wire attached, we'll go ahead and take the rest of our wires, bundle them up, and use some extra long zip ties to help keep them secure and out of the way. With that, that finishes our install. That will do it for part number HM42137, the Hopkins Endurance 5th Wheel Gooseneck 90 Degree Wiring Harness with a 7 pole plug connector on our 2006 Dodge Ram pick up. .
