How to Install the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel Wiring Harness on a 2016 GMC Sierra 3500

Today on our 2016 GMC Sierra 3500, we are going to be showing you how to install the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel/Gooseneck 90 Degree Wiring Harness. This offers the seventh pole plug. It's part number is 41157. This is a nice, easy addition to add to your truck, truly help making the connections with the fifth wheel trailers much easier. We're going to be able to locate a seven pole plug tied directly into the vehicle's wiring without having to do a lot of modifications. It's a pretty quick, straightforward job. Let's start by taking a look at the socket for the plug.

Nice thing, you see that cover It's going to go beyond 180 degrees, that way it's going to make it a little bit easier for us to see exactly where we need to get that lined up. We're gonna have a seal that goes all the way around the outside. You can see where the cover's been pressing into it. It's going to keep out that moisture, it's going to keep out that debris so we don't have to worry about corrosion building up inside. To secure that, all you're really going to need is a 1/4" bit driver.

We're going to need a 2 1/8" hole saw, that's going to give us the hole we need for that to fit in. They have provided us with zip ties to help tidy up a little bit of extra wang that we usually have. I'm going to substitute a few longer ones here. We could daisy chain these together but these are going to just make it a little bit easier for us. They've also given us some turbinol grease.

That's going to help us to keep, again, the moisture and dirt out which will lead to better performance because we won't have corrosion build up. The first thing we need to decide is exactly where we want our plug to be located. Typically, I like it low. This little inset area is really nice because that's going to keep it once it's seated down in there protected from items kind of sliding by it. It's reachable from outside of the truck. Those are a few of the things I look for in getting proper placement, which, we're going to be going right there.

Get our hole saw and make our hole. Once you've got that hole cut out, it's a good idea just to trim up those sharp edges. We're going to extend the wire loom out slightly and we want to stick that up from the bottom so it comes up in our hole. Take a little bit of our turbinol grease, and we're going to put that right in our plug. Plug in our connector there, you should hear that little audible click and that's ready to go, right into position. We're going to mount this using the four holes into the bed of the truck with our self tapping screws. There we are. Now we can head underneath to make our connections there. Now we'll take our two plug ins. We're going to pass those right up over the top of the frame rail. Pull it down over here and we'll gain access to our plug which is going to be right beside the license plate there. There's a small grey clip here that's for security. We're going to pull that out. Once that is out, we'll just press in on that tab and we should be able to pull it out and separate it. Now we'll add some dieletric grease to that factory connector there. Plug it together, now this end goes in our factory plug. The other side, that plugs into our plug that was removed from the factory seven pole in the rear of the vehicle. That one is going to have that little locking inaudible 00:04:00 so just pop that back in. We'll just use one of the zip ties and see we've got a little bit of access, we'll pull that up. Nice solid piece of body metal right there, that's where we'll secure our ground. We're going to use another . what I am going to use is just a number 12 self tapping screw. Now we're going to plug in our tester here. I recommend whether you are using a tester or a trailer, the first time you do, take whatever left over dielectric grease you have, apply it to the plug, that way when you plug it in it's going to get a good amount on all of our pins in here, so they will also be protected. We're going to start by just a quick check showing that we've got about 13 volts coming back from out batteries. That's a good sign. That means we should have all of our connections made. Switch back over to trailer brakes, you'll be able to see the current in the voltage coming through our needles here when we operate that. We'll start with those running lights. Do our left blinker, our right blinker. We'll do our brakes which should light up the left and right signal and then we'll also try our brake controller signal. Now with the vehicle running we should be able to see our reverse lights. With everything working as it should, that's going to complete our installation of the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel and Gooseneck 90 Degree Wiring Harness with the Seven Pole Plug. Part number is 41157 on our 2016 GMC Sierra 3500.
