How to Install the Hopkins Endurance Fifth Wheel Wiring Harness on a 2017 Ram 1500

Speaker 1: . Endurance 5th wheel gooseneck 90-degree wiring harness with seven-pole plug, part number 41157. This is what our seven-pole plug looks like mounted on the bed of our truck. This is going to give us the proper functions for any trailer that we're pulling. It's going to give us, not only our running lights, our each turn signal, brake lights, and our ground. It's also going to provide us with reverse, and wiring for a brake controller. It's going to be a nice durable plastic.

It's going to withstand all types of weather. It's going to have a spring-loaded lid, on the inside of the lid, it's going to have a foam ring that's going to help seal the inside connections from dirt, debris and moisture. One thing I really like about this plug is being in the bed of the truck, it allows you to plug your gooseneck or 5th wheel directly up. It keeps all your wiring in the bed, rather than having to droop them over your tailgate. As far as the installation goes, it is very straightforward and it is very simple. The only cutting required is going to be, right here, where the plug is in the bed of the truck.

It is going to come with all the necessary hardware. Now that we've gone over some of the features, let me show you how to get it installed.First thing we need to do is find a good location to mount our plug. There's a couple different places we can do it. We can do it right here. If you do it here, keep in mind that it may get in the way of your strap, possibly, maybe not.

Just keep that in mind if you decide to put it there. You can move it back, up over here, it would be out of the way of your straps. I think, what I'm going to do, is I'm going to put it right here.I'm going to take a two and an eighth inch hole saw bit, center it here, let's see. When you're drilling through here, just make sure that you don't have anything on the other side, it's open. Normally, they are, just double-check to make sure.

Next, we're going to take a small file, we're going to knock off the burrs, so we don't damage our wiring while we're pulling it through. You want to clean up our shavings, here. Once you get it cleaned up, you want to take some clear coat, or some black paint. We're going to cover up that bare metal. It's going to help keep it from corroding later on down the road.Next thing I'm going to do is, if you have a wire hanger. You need something stiff or heavy. If you don't have a wire hanger, because they're a little harder to find, or airline tube. What I like to use is either a bolt, tie it on the end of a string, or a nut, like this. Basically, it's a plumb bob. You just want it weighted on one end. We're going to drop down through the hole. We're going to take one end of our wire and I'm just going to tape it onto it. You don't have to use a lot of tape. All we're doing is pulling it up through the hole, just like that. Then we can go ahead and remove our tape and plumb bob. Plug our seven-pole plug into it, slide it back through. Then we'll take our self-tapping screws. It's also going to come with some flat washers. I'm going to go ahead and use them. We'll get one of them drilled in place here. We've gone ahead and removed the spare tire to make it a little bit easier. What we need to do is we need to come to our factory seven way. Go ahead and unclip that, pull this connector off. On the side, here, I'll put it off and show you, there's a little tab that you push in. This, right here, you push in and you'll be able to pull it off. Now, we're going to take our wiring we just installed. We want to make sure that we're staying away from the spare tire. We're going to go up, over top, of our frame rail, here. And you can see, we have plenty of extra. I'm going to go ahead and loop it, like this. Zip tie the loop together first. Then I'm going to take this and I'm going to tuck it up, like that, and zip tie it right to this existing wiring. That helps keep it up out out of the way. Then we're going to take our ends and we're just going to match them. Push those two together and we're going to take this end, it's going to go where our original one was, just like that. Push it in until you hear it click. Once you get that done, you can put your spare tire back in. Test everything to make sure everything is working correctly.Next, we'll test out our wiring using an alternate power source. This is going to simulate being hooked up to your camper or trailer; Left turn, right turn, brake lights, running lights. Now we've hooked up that same alternate power source to our original plug, which is located on our bumper. We're going to run through the same signals to show that both work correctly; left turn, right turn, brakes, running lights. That will do it for the look at, and installation, on the Hopkins Endurance 5th wheel gooseneck 90-degree wiring harness with seven-pole plug, part number 41157, on our 2017 Ram 1500.
