How to Install the Malone SteelTop Square Crossbars Roof Rack on a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Today on our 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek we're going to be test fitting the Malone Steeltop Universal Roof Rack for Raised Side Rails, part number MPG201. The Malone Steeltop Universal Roof Rack system is a universal roof rack system designed to work with your factory raised side rails. These are square bars, so they work with a wide variety of rooftop accessories such as bike racks, kayak carriers or cargo baskets, and they also come equipped with locks on the end so you can actually secure these to your factory raised side rails once they're installed. Together the two bars hae a combined carrying capacity of 165 pounds, though you always want to double check with your vehicle's manual to make sure your roof can withstand those weights. This is a very easy and simple installation for your side rails, and comes with all the tools necessary to install it. Now that we've gone over some of the features of the roof rack system, let's go ahead and show you how it installs. To start off, we'll unlock our end caps, pulling off those pieces there. That's going to expose the Allen head screw we need to loosen up the clamp.

We'll take our Allen tool, loosen up the clamp. It'll be a little bit tight at first when you first get it. All right, we'll repeat this on the other side, and then we'll be able to set this on our side rails. We'll set them in place on both sides. Then we'll measure on both sides to make sure they're straight and even. We'll take a fixed point such as this edge here and we'll just measure on both sides to make sure it's even.

Then finally, we're going to get our crossbar overhang measurement, and that's how far the bar is going to be sticking out past our tower. Now that I know what we're working with we'll go ahead and make our adjustments. Looks like we can give a little bit back to the other side. With that figured out, now we can take our tightening tool here and snug this down to our bars. Now, as we snug this down, our towers going to get tightened down to our bar as well. We'll repeat this on the other side.

Install our end cap here, lock it down. We'll do this on the other side, and now we can repeat this process for our rear bar. As far as the crossbar spread is concerned, and that's going to be measured from center of the bar to center of the bar, as long as they're at least 24 inches apart it should be okay. There you have it for the Malone Steeltop Universal Roof Rack system for our 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek.
