How to Install the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Today on our 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, we will be installing the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with bulbs, part number RM-155. To begin with, we'll need to route our wires from the front of the vehicle towards the back. To accomplish this, we'll be using a pull wire, in this case a piece of old airline tubing. When we get past the engine compartment, we can route the wire through the frame all the way to the back. Here at the front of the vehicle we will also protect our wire with the loom material provided with the install kit. We can secure it in place with electrical tape.

We will use zip ties and a few loom clamps to secure our wiring along the way. The loom clamps are available on our website as part number A0500. Now, at the rear of our vehicle, we need to remove our tail lights. There are four screws on each. The tail lights will be be disconnected and set aside for now. Next, we'll fish our wires up through the driver's side tail light opening.

Now we can turn our attention to the tail lights themselves. First, remove the tail light plug from the tail light housing, then we can remove the lights by turning them slightly and pulling them out. With the lights out of the way, we can now drill a hole for our new bulb. Here on the side of the housing we will mark out a location to drill with a paint marker. We'll first drill a pilot hole and then use a hole saw to get the appropriate sized hole. Using a flat bladed screwdriver, we can then slightly bend out the teeth on our new bulb socket.

We can now install our bulb into the new socket and press it firmly into the hole we just created. The teeth on the socket should hold it in place. We can now place the two original lights and the plug back into place. We will repeat this same process with the other tail light. Back at the rear of the vehicle, we can now take our wires and split them down the middle, green and yellow on one side, white and brown on the other.

Next, we will cut both the white and brown wires here at the tail light opening. Each end will get stripped back and we will rejoin them using one end of a butt connector. The jumpers we added to both will be routed over to the passenger side along with the green wire, our right turn signal. The yellow wire, our left turn signal, will stay here and get a butt connector. We are now ready to connect to our new bulb as follows, black to white for ground, brown to brown for running lights, and yellow to red for our turn signal. With these connections made we can use some electrical tape to further secure them. Now we can re-install our tail lights. We will route our remaining wires over to the passenger side using some loom clamps to hold them in place. With our wires pulled up into the tail light opening, we can trim them to length. Here we will be attaching black to white, brown to brown, and green to red for our turn signal. With both our tail lights re-installed, let's go ahead and test it out. That will complete our install of the Roadmaster Tail Light Wiring Kit with bulbs, part number RM-155, on our 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited. .
