How to Install the Rock Tamers Heavy-Duty Adjustable Mud Flaps on a 2017 Coachmen Leprechaun Motorh


Clayton: Hello, everybody. Clayton here at etrailer.com. Here at etrailer.com, we install, test and review tons of different products to help you as a customer make a more educated decision before your purchase. Today, I have a 2017 Leprechaun, Coachman we'll be taking a look at, and I'll show you how to install the Rock Tamers Adjustable Mudflaps.This is what our mudflaps are going to look like installed. Now, the basis of a mudflap, especially behind a vehicle like this, is to protect either your trailer or your towed vehicle, in this case, because we're going to be using it for a flat tow. These are really heavy duty mat.

You don't have to worry about anything puncturing these. They're going to hold up well over time. They're really heavy duty rubber material. It's pretty solid. I mean, the only play you see is in our tow bar.

But the actual bracket and everything that mounts the mudflap is super solid and stout.These are pretty adjustable. You can adjust them to your liking for whatever you're towing. Now in this case, we have them set up pretty standard. We'll let our customer adjust them down the road if they so choose. But all you have to do is pull back on this and turn it down, and then you can turn this whole shaft and get these mudflaps centered.

So really, you can adjust it height-wise and then how close or far away you want it from your RV.The width of our mudflaps is fully adjustable as well. We can adjust it between 67 and a quarter to 96 and three quarter inches. So that's really going to span a lot of different vehicles, whether you're towing a trailer or flat towing. Our mat is going to be a three eight inch thick heavy rubber. So it's really going to help protect anything behind our RV.

And one really nice feature about this is you can take it off and put it on anything else that you might have. And these are tear resistant, so you don't have to worry about anything big just ripping our mat off of our brackets here. So it's really going to give us that peace of mind that everything is protected and strong.Our main mounting bracket and our mudflap mounts are going to be a UV resistant black powder coat finish. So that's going to help resist rust and corrosion over time, and it just looks really nice on the back of our RV. And our bars here are going to be a stainless steel, so we don't have to worry about those rusting either. This kit is pretty easy to get installed. It says it's no drill, but they do supply a punch if you wanted to punch out the holes on your mat, whenever you have to cut it. But I chose to drill it. It's just a little bit easier and really helps enlarge that hole.And overall, my professional opinion, these would be a really good upgrade for your RV, especially if you're flat towing. You always want to protect that car behind your RV. One cool thing is you can always take this off and put it on anything else that you might have down the road. So we went over the features, talked a little bit about installation. I'll show you how to get them installed now.To start our installation, we need to remove our tow bar. So let's take our pin and clip out. Then we'll slide our tow bar out of place and set it off to the side. We now want to grab our main bracket and slide it over our receiver tube on our tow bar, just like that. For now, we'll leave it loose. We'll pick back up our tow bar and slide it into our receiver. We can go ahead and reinstall our pin and clip at this point. We now want to slide our bracket all the way up against our receiver tube and tighten down our set screws on the end. We're going to use a 16 millimeter socket and wrench. But for now, we'll just get them hand tight.We're now ready to secure our mounting bracket. We do want at least a one inch gap between our receiver tube opening and this bracket, so I'm going to put it right about here. We're just going to thread the bolts down here and get it hand tight. You do want to tighten it pretty evenly on both sides. Going to have them hand tight now, so we can tighten the outside bolt down the rest of the way. So it's tightened down. We now want to come back and tighten down the inside bolt. This is just going to keep it from sliding off. Again, you want to make sure to do this on both sides.We're now going to grab our support tube and just slide it through the opening in our brace. We'll just pull that all the way through for now. And we can grab our mudflap bracket. And this simply just slides over the tube, just like so. We'll repeat that same process over on the other side.On the end of our rod, right here, we have end caps. Depending on how they're shipped to you, they might be off or installed. And in our case, they we're installed. But it's just a bolt that goes to the end of that end cap and bolts on the backside. We can grab our provided Allen key and just tighten down these bolts that secure our mounting rod. And we go bolt by bolt and just tighten them pretty evenly.We now want to determine the width of our mounting bracket. There are a few holes along the outside here, that way you can set that with in a few different spots. There's going to be a hole in our mud flat bracket. We're going to line that up with the middle hole right there.Then we're going to take our carriage bolt provided, the smaller one. We're just going to slide that through, then add a small nylon lock nut, that looks like this, on the backside. And a good way to check your width is to step back and look at your wheel width on the motorhome to help set this width. Once you have both sides in, you can come back with an eight millimeter socket and tighten this down. Just like that. We're going to repeat that same process on the other side. inaudible 00:05:40 is going to come with a couple end caps. You can go ahead and just slide these into the end of our bars here. We want to make sure to do this on both sides.We now want to hold our mudflap up to our bracket and just see if we need to trim it or anything. These are shipped by 20 by 24, so they are pretty big. We're just going to hold it up here and see if we need to trim it. And as you can see, we definitely need to trim it. Nice thing is on the backside, we do have those corrugated lines. We need three to four inches of ground clearance for our mudflaps. I'm going to cut them at three. Then if our customer wants them shorter, we'll shorten them up for them.So we'll go ahead and take a measurement from the ground to the center of this hole. We're looking right at 20 inches. So we need to cut three inches off of our mats. I just want to hold our tape measure up. And our three inch mark actually falls right in the middle of this corrugated dot, which is really nice. So let's take a utility knife and cut along this corrugation to get that amount cut it off. After trimming one side, we have about three and a half inches from the ground to the bottom of our mat. So we can go ahead and trim our other mat on the same line.Our kit is going to provide us with a punch. Personally, this punch is very terrible. It's not going to punch a hole in this. The end is pretty sharp, so I would suggest not using the punch. But instead, we're going to use a drill bit. We're just going to grab a drill bit that's the same size as that hole. We're going to drill into it like this. Now we're going to flip it over and clean out both sides, that way our hardware goes cleanly through. That's a lot more effective than using the punch. Just make sure you have something underneath of your mat that you're drilling into. In this case, we're using a pallet.This is the hardware we're going to be using to mount our mats to our support brackets. We're going to slide our carriage bolt through, add a flat washer and our nylon lock nut on the backside. When we install them, we want this open pad facing the back of the vehicle, so we want this corrugation side facing the vehicle. I found it a lot easier just to pull this off and add our hardware. It's just easier to work with. I'm going to actually slide our mat through our bracket. We can now grab a 13 millimeter socket and tighten these down the rest of the way.Before we re-install our flaps, we want to lay our metal Rock Tamers logo into that bezel. We're going to grab our hardware. Here's the hardware we're going to be using to mount our nameplates. Our bolt here is going to slide through. In the middle, we're going to add the spacer. Then on the backside, we're going to add a flat washer and a nylon lock nut. If you're having trouble getting that spacer in, you can slide it in beforehand, just like that. Now it's going to be a whole lot easier to get our hardware in. We're going to repeat the same process for our remaining holes.We now want to grab our provided star tool, put that on the bolt on the outside. Grab a 10 millimeter socket and tighten it on the back. Repeat that process for our remaining hardware on both flaps. We now just want to loosen these up, and then we'll slide them right back onto our support braces. We want to make sure to re-install our hardware. Now you want to come back and tighten down any harboring you might've loosened.Now you can come back and make any necessary adjustments you need before you hit the road. With everything adjusted, we're ready to hit the road and hook up our trailer, or in this case, our flat towed car. That's going to do it for our look at the Rock Tamers on our 2017 Leprechaun by Coachman.
