How to Install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2013 Honda Pilot


Hey everybody, Ryan here at etrailer. Today we have a 2013 Honda Pilot and we're gonna be showing you how to install the Tekonsha 7-way vehicle wiring harness. But before we do that, why don't we check it out and make sure this is a product that would work for you. So these Pilots are really versatile as SUVs and people tend to use them to do a little bit of everything which does include towing some relatively large trailers. You know, they're capable and can get the job done. So if that's what you plan on doing, you're gonna need a way to hook up your trailer wiring, that way the lighting functions will work properly and you'll be safe and legal.

And that's exactly what I have in the 7-way connector here is going to allow us to do. It's gonna be that round type connector which will accept the larger round connectors on your trailer, allowing you to just plug right in and have everything working. So honestly, I do really like how this is set up here. It really puts off a factory type appearance which is always nice and as far as the kit itself goes it is really high quality. I'm actually a big fan of Tekansho wiring.

I've got a Honda Pilot myself and I have a Tekansho kit on my car. So I've definitely got faith in them, everything's really well-made. The connector plug itself here has a spring loaded cap, it's nice and tight that way when you're not using it it'll stay close, keeping debris and moisture out and on the bottom of it there's a catch here, that way when you plug in your connector that catch will rest on the connector and you can't accidentally pull it out. So this a nice little safety feature there. Even though it does seal uptight, I do suggest every now and again not a terrible idea just to apply some dielectric grease to the terminals there just to go that extra step and help prevent any corrosion.

So one thing I do wanna mention if you need only a 4-way flat type trailer connector not a big deal, there's actually a kit available as well with that 4-way flat. If you need both a seven and 4-way what you can do is use this kit and get a seven to four adapter plug that would go in here and that would allow you to use the 4-way flat connector as well. So if you had a couple of trailers or something like that. But other than that, a wiring kit you really can't go wrong with. As far as the installation goes Honda makes it very straightforward.

Essentially, you're just going to have to put a fuse in under the hood and plug in a couple of connectors and that's really all there is to it. So shouldn't take up a whole lot of your time or give you a whole lot of issues. Speaking of which, lets go ahead and hook it up together now. To begin our installation, we're gonna be here at the back of our Pilot and we need to access a panel that way we can plug while wiring in. So if we open up our hatch and go ahead and fold your third row seating down, which I've done. If you look here on the driver's side we're gonna have this panel here. And this one in particular is labeled the auxiliary fuse and we need to remove that panel. You can take a trim tool or a flathead screwdriver and just pry underneath it, pull it off and set it to the side for now. So at this point we can grab our harness and before we plug it in, I think it'd be a good idea to connect our box in some of our relays first while we have it out in the open. So this end here, the box is simply just gonna plug right into that and if you look at this connector here we're gonna see some openings and we're gonna take the included relays and plug those in. So these just push right down into place. You can only plug them in one way. So you don't have to worry about, you know, doing it wrong or anything like that. But the way this is gonna work now that we have it set up is this connector end is gonna plug into a factory connector behind that panel that we removed. So if you look behind in that opening from that panel that we removed we can see the connector inside there and this is what it looks like. It'll match up with the end of our new harness. So once you identify that, you can reach in there, plug your wiring in. So I'll go ahead and do that now and show you what it looks like once I have it connected. So now at this point, what I went ahead and did was just using the included zip ties to zip tie our relays to the harness, just to stop them from bouncing around and now we can mount everything up. So if you look at this box here, we're gonna see some raised edges and those are actually going to fit around that metal tab there. So it's a perfect mounting location. So with that said, you can just kinda fit our wiring in, take the box, slide that on and once that is in place, we can take our panel and just reinstall it. At this point, we can move under the hood and we need to install one of the included fuses here in the fuse box on the driver's side. So this is the fuse box, we can remove the cover by simply squeezing the three tabs in, pulling that off and we're gonna have an empty slot right there and that's a slot that we're gonna use to install our new fuse. So I'll just go ahead, push that in place and re-install the cover. So now underneath our vehicle here at the back just behind our bumper on the driver side, we're gonna have a gray connector plug and this is what it's gonna look like. We need to remove this dummy cap that's inside, keeping the terminals clean that way we can plug our new wiring harness into it. So to do that, I'm going to remove it from the frame. You just take a trim tool or a screwdriver that will release it, flying us to lower down and making it easier to work with. So this side here, we need to pull off this plastic piece. You can push up kinda on that button, pull that out and you wanna save this, but then you need to push not only this button down, this one on the top as well. So you kinda grab both sides and pull that out. Now what we can do is grab our connector here and simply just plug this right in. It only goes in one way. So you don't have to worry about mixing it up or anything and once you have it plugged in, we can take our plastic, we'll keep her there and push that back into place as well. So before we go any further, what I wanna do is test our wiring to make sure that it works properly and that's because this is gonna get mounted right here to this panel, so we'll have to drill an opening. So I'd rather know this is working properly before we start to drill on our bumper here. So what I'm gonna do to test this is plug this right in and then I'm gonna use this tester which we'll plug into here and now I can get inside of the vehicle and run through all of our functions. I do suggest using a tester like this so that way it eliminates any potential issues that may be on your trailer. So I'll go ahead and try our left turn signal, our right turn signal, our tail lights, our brake lights and we can try our reverse lights as well. So now that we've verified everything works, what we can do is get it mounted up. So I'm just going to unplug this like so and I'm just gonna kind of eyeball where I want it. So I did that and I put a little mark there. If your setup isn't like this, what you can do is get some brackets and that'll allow you to connect brackets to your hitch and get this mounted up. So whichever way works best for you, you can go ahead and go that route. So I'm just gonna use a two inch hole saw and drill out our opening. That way our 7-way can get mounted up. So now that we have our hole drilled out we can take our wiring, kinda hold it right here, take our plug, plug that in and then we can mount up our 7-way. Kit doesn't come with screws or anything like that but what I'm gonna do is just use these self tapping screws. I'll get it as straight as I can here and secure it down. So now that we have our plug mounted I went back underneath the vehicle, re-secured our connector plugs to the bottom of the frame and then I just zip tied up some of the slack and the wire there to the back of our bumper beam and then this is how it all turned out. And that'll finish up our look at and our installation of the Tekonsha 7-way vehicle wiring harness on our 2013 Honda Pilot..
