How to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 2017 Ram 1500

Today on our 2017 Ram 1500, we'll be installing the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 trailer brake controller, part number 90195, in conjunction with the Tekonsha wiring adapter, part number 3024-P. Here's what our brake controller looks like installed. As you can see, it's nice and clean and installation, tucked up nicely underneath our dash, but yet still easy to reach while we're driving down the road. We have several different controls on it. On the bottom, we have our manual override switch. This will alow us to activate our trailer brakes without applying our brakes in our truck, so if our trailer starts to step out of line on us, we can slow a bit down and get it back straight behind us by applying the brakes. We have our gain adjustment switches here, to adjust our power output for our brakes.

We have other settings here for our boost level. This top right, we can increase our boost level. We have off and then we have three different settings. There's off there, boost level one, boost level two, and boost level three. As you increase your boost level settings, you will get instant more power going to your trailer brakes to help slow you down faster. This is a more higher end brake controller than other ones on the market.

There's a lot more other settings on it than other brake controllers offer. You can adjust multiple different display settings, your brightness, you can change your color on it to whatever you want, you can adjust your brake type here, standard electric brakes or hydraulic over electric. You even have a diagnostic mode on this. The diagnostic modes are good modes to see if you have a problem with your vehicle if your brakes aren't working properly. Another nice feature about this brake controller is it will inform you if you lose an electrical connection with your trailer. Right now we have one.

I'll unplug it and you can see what happens. As you can see, the display starts flashing "no trailer connected" and it goes to red to inform you of a very good warning message. Now the customization settings of our display and having a large display like this, and the fact that it's a proportional brake controller to control up to four axles on your trailer, sets it apart from other brake controllers on the market. It's a highly advanced brake controller, but still yet cost effective and easy to use. Now that we've gone over some of the features of our Tekonsha Prodigy P3, we'll show you how to get it installed. The first thing we're going to want to do is find our factory brake controller plug located underneath our dash, above in front of our accelerator pedal.

We'll grab it and pull it down so we can work with it a little bit. Our brake controller plug that we're using is this one over here to the left. There's an auxiliary plug for something else here on the right. We'll separate the two by undoing the tape. We'll tape this one back up so it's protected and stick that back up underneath the dash. We'll take our adaptor plug here and plug it in. We'll still the rest up underneath the dash a little bit, leaving us our end here to work with. We need to find a place to mount our bracket for our brake controller. Since we don't want to drill any holes in the bottom section of our dash, we'll just use this screw right here. It's a seven millimeter. We'll take it out, take our bracket that we're going to use, stick our screw through it, and then reinstall it. Okay, we'll take our brake controller now and plug it into the harness. Now we'll take our brake controller, slide it into our bracket, line the holes up that we're going to use, and install our screws. Tighten those screws down all the way now, making sure we get the angle that we want on our controller. That completes our installation of Tekonsha Prodigy P3 trailer brake controller, part number 90195 on our 2017 Ram 1500.

I haven't got the ram connector end with my P2, can you tell me what colors on the p2 harness match up with what color on the dodge harness? thanks

Here are the functions that each of the wires from the P2 need to be match up to: Blue - 7-Way Output to Trailer Black - 12V Power White - Ground Red - COLD Side of Stop Light Switch (only gets hot when brake pedal is pressed) You'll need to use a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to verify what wires on your Ram carry each of these functions.
