How to Install the Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness on a 2019 Toyota RAV4


Shane: Hi, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today you're going to be taking a look, I'm going to walk you through the installation of the Tekonsha T1 vehicle wiring harness with four pole flat trailer connector on your 2019 Toyota RAV4.There's a lot of good reasons to add wiring to your vehicle. Maybe you have a cargo carrier that's going to require lights. Maybe you just bought a trailer. Maybe you have a small camper that you want to tow. Four pole wiring is going to give you all the proper lighting functions, so you can safely tow all your trailers or use that cargo carrier.

It's going to give you both turn signals, your brake lights, then your running lights. This four pole wiring is going to live inside the vehicle. It's going to plug directly into factory plugs behind each taillight. It's going to have a converter box that's going to protect your factory wiring in your vehicle from any backfeed, if there's a wiring issue with the trailer.Now as far as our converter box. The converter box is going to be filled with potting material.

Where your wire connections are made on the circuit board, the whole inside of this box is filled with potting material to help hold those connections on that circuit board really well. It's really going to reduce the risk of the wires coming loose caused by vibration. Which happens with a lot of other competitors wiring harnesses.Our four pole end is going to come with an attached dust cap. It's going to help protect your connections when it's outside of the vehicle. When you're not using it, you simply roll it up and you can stick it right inside of your spare tire area and it stays nice and out of the way.

When you're ready to use it, you pull it out. You're going to hang it right over top of this rubber seam here. And it's designed to go over top this, so it's not going to damage the wiring. You want to make sure you stay away from anywhere where the door attaches down here. Hanging out just like this, we'll close our door.

Get our trailer hooked up to our hitch, hooked up to our wiring, we're ready to go.To start out installation, we need to get in the back of the vehicle. We're going to go ahead and remove our floor coverings. You're going to have two plastic panels here. Go ahead and pop these out on each side, one on each side. Need to remove our threshold. We're going to start on one side and slowly start to pull up and work our way across. We'll set it aside. If any of these come off when you're pulling this off, and they get stuck in here. Pull them out and stick them back in because they slide into the side. It's going to be easier to put this in if they're on the threshold panel.On each side we're going to have a tie down. Take a 10 millimeter socket, remove the bolt and then remove the tie down. Right up here on each side, you're going to have a fastener. Take a flathead screwdriver or a small one or if you have a pick. You're going to pry out the center. And then pull out the base also. If they come apart, you can stick them back together. You just want to make sure you get both pieces.Next we need to pull our panel out. You want to make sure where your tie down connected here, you just kind of push it out a little bit over the top of the nut there. Pull it out like this and then we'll locate our wiring here on our driver's side. Right here, this bottom plug is going to be our wiring to our taillight. We're going to push down right up here and separate the plugs. We're going to take our wiring harness with the yellow end. We're going to match the plugs. Put that in there, we'll plug this back into factory holder here, just like that.Now we're going to have a power wire that we need to run up to the battery. We can run it inside, but I always find it easier to run it outside the vehicle. The hole underneath the vehicle has plastic panels that we can run it underneath to protect it. There's a rubber grommet right back here in this corner. It's a little bit hard to get to and I don't want to damage the panel. So what I'm going to do is take a 14 millimeter socket and I'm going to take off this tie down right up here in the front. Phillips head screwdriver, we're going to take this bolt off here and this one over here.Your carpet is going to have some little push fasteners that go inside this panel. All you got to do is just pull up on them. Pull this out and set it aside. And then this is the grommet that we're trying to get to. You can see it already has some factory wiring going to it.Now I need to get my power wire, which is going to come in a large bundle that we're running to the front of the vehicle through that grommet. We're going to cut a little slit in it. Just make sure that you don't damage your factory wiring. And the hole just needs to be big enough for our power wire.Now we'll take our power wire, we're going to strip it back. We're going to add on one of the butt connectors that come in our kit. Crimp it on. We're going to take the black wire coming off of our wiring harness, connect it in like that. Crimp it down, pull the wire through the rest of the way.Next thing we're going to do is we're going to mount our box. You're going to get a two sided sticky tape. Stick it on the back of the converter box. We want to flat surface. I'm going to put it right here. Make sure to press it in, it's going to hold. Kit's going to come with a self tapping screw. It can be mounted anywhere on metal. Make sure it's on metal not on plastic. I'm going to start my hole with my self tapping screw first. Take your ground wire. Just like that.I'm going to take the wire with the green and run it over to our passenger's side. Our four pole wire, we're going to run it underneath our panel here. And then we can put our panel back in place. Then our passenger's side's going to hook up the same place. Once you get your passenger's side done, you can reinstall your panels and your hardware. I took my green wire that's running across my passenger's side just zip tied it, so that it stays underneath this panel as much as possible. Completely up to you. So that it's not hanging down inside of here. I zip tied here and zip tied here, just kind of keep it taught, like that.Then we need to get our power wire up to the front of the vehicle to the engine compartment where the battery is. Make sure when running it, you stay away from anything hot or moving. I went over top the rear axle, right up through here. I came down, 10 millimeter socket I took this bolt out. We're going to have a couple more that run along this side and one push pin fastener. And I took my wire and I just tucked it right up underneath this panel all the way up to here.From the engine compartment where my battery is, I took an airline tube. If you have anything wire, you can use that. Something that's a little stiff that you can attach this to. Go up top and we'll pull that and it'll bring this up with it. We'll pull our wire up to the top. I'm going to actually run it back behind here. I'm going to go ahead and zip tie my wire right there. Just so it stays taught and it's not hanging down at the bottom. I'm going to cut my wire down the side. Strip back the ends. We're going to take our fuse holder, looks like this. We're going to cut it in half. Strip back both ends. Take our ring terminal comes in our kit, put it on one end. And then your kit's going to come with another butt connector for this. I suggest using a heat shrink butt connector instead. It's really going to help protect those connections from any moisture.I'm going to take a little bit of electrical tape. Go ahead and cover that heat shrink butt connector up. Just to give it a little added protection. Go ahead and zip tie my wire here. Twelve millimeter socket, remove the nut on the positive side of our battery. Then put the ring terminal on, reinstall the nut. Once you have that connection made, you can install your fuse.Once we have all of our wiring hooked up, we'll test it out using part number I26. Brake lights, running lights, left turn, right turn. Once you've tested your wiring, you know everything's working correctly, you're ready to go. Again, I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Installed this on my 2022 RAV4, now the left rear brake light is stuck on. The harness works, I have full power to my trailer, however, the right rear brake light on my new car is stuck on. Help!

You have a crossed wire or a short somewhere in the wire harness. Using a tester like the Circuit Tester Kit # 40376 test all the leads at the harness and make sure the grounds are good too. I linked a guide for brake controllers to help out too. If the troubleshooting starts to shoot back I would talk to a mechanic to make sure that it was installed without damage or fault.

For a wiring harness with a isolation module included, the system will not work without the independent 12 volt line. This type of system is preferable as it protects the vehicle electronics from faults with the trailer wiring. If you really want to go old-school you can use the Curt # C58044 wiring harness and splice into the signal wiring.

The battery for the RAV4 hybrid is in the back on the right not under the hood.

You are correct - thanks for pointing that out! On the Hybrid model of the RAV4 you would need to take a different path with the hot lead from the T-One harness because of its battery location.
