How to Install a Thule Easyfold Xt on a 2 e Bike Rack on a 2017 Tesla Model s TH903202

Shane: Hey, guys. Shane here with etrailer.com. Today I have a 2017 Tesla model S and we're going to be test fitting the Thule EasyFold XT 2 bike rack. First thing you're going to notice is going to be a platform bike rack designed for e-bikes. It's going to hold up to two bikes. It's going to work with inch and a quarter hitches and two inch hitches.

Now, even though this bike rack is designed mainly for your e-bikes, which are heavier bikes, it's going to work with just about anybody out there from your road bikes, all the way up to your fat tire bikes. Now, with this being an e-bike bike rack, e-bikes are a little bit heavy because they have batteries on them. We're going to have a 65 pound weight capacity per bike, which just gives us a total of 130 pounds, which exceeds a lot of other bike racks out there. One of the questions we ask ourselves when we are looking for a bike rack is, am I going to have access to the trunk of the vehicle Or maybe we have another vehicle in our household and we want to be able to use this bike rack on that. Maybe an SUV. The answer is yes.

With this bike rack, actually, the rack folded down almost flat. So, the way to fold it is you have a lever here. You can use your foot. You simply grab the bar, push down on the lever and you pop this up. And you can fold this down with the bikes on the rack.

And you can see we have plenty of space here. It's not going to interfere with our trunk on our car, or with that SUV hatch. Now, if our rack is in the down position, to put it back up, you're basically just going to lift, push the rack up till you hear it click. Our bike's going to be held down in place in three different places. We have wheel straps here and here, front and back wheel, and we also have a clamp to go around our frame. Now, how our straps work, you basically run it through over top of your rim, you're going to feed it in just like that, pull it down.

And you're just going to pull this handle out, click it down until it's cinched. And you're going to repeat that for the front one. Now to release it, you simply push it and it releases the strap. Now, for a third location for holding our bike in place, we're going to have a nice rubberized clamp. Basically all you do is you're going to push it up against your frame, you're going to twist this handle until you hear it click. Once you hear it click, it's tight. Nice thing is, this bike rack is going to come with two keys. So, we're able to lock this and this handle is just going to free spin, so nobody can just walk up and take our bikes off of our rack. Let's go ahead and remove our bike and we'll go over a few more features on that. Well, we're not using a strap. We simply roll them over like this, and they're going to inaudible 00:03:35 right in place. Just like that. This rack will accept up to a 48 inch wide wheelbase bike. Our center here is going to be for your road bikes. We're going to fit up to a three inch wide tire. Now, if your fat tire bike has a four inch wide tire, it will accept that, but you will have to pick up the fat tire straps. When we're ready to remove our bike rack from our vehicle, we can simply fold the two sides up. You can see very slim design. One thing I really like about this is how it actually attaches to our receiver tube. We don't need a pin and clip like other bike racks. It has a pin or a clip on it already, and our handle can actually be locked with the same keys we use to lock our bikes in place. When we're ready to remove it, you simply unlock it, loosen the handle, pull the pen out. Down here on the bottom we're going to have a small lever. We're going to push down. Kind of rotate that forward just a little bit. We'll use the two handles right here on the top. We'll slide our rack out and then we can rotate this right up in the place like that. Makes it very easy, slim designed for storage. It also can have wheels on it, so you don't have to carry it. We can roll it to wherever we're going to be storing it. That being said, the bike rack is only going to weigh about 45 pounds. So, it's really not heavy if you didn't want to carry it. Now, we're going to give you a few measurements. Our lowest point is going to be this handle to the ground. It's going to be about eight and a quarter inches. So, keep that number in mind if we're going up any steep hills or up any steep driver ways or anything like that. Our closest point to our fascia is going to be here. And we're looking at about nine inches. Our furthest point from our fascia is going to be here. And you're looking at about 33 inches. You want to keep that number in mind when parking in the garage or anything like that. Now, we've gone over some of the features of this bike rack showing you how it all works. Let's go ahead and take it out on a test course and see how it performs with the bikes on it. Here on our test course, we'll start by going through the slalom. This is going to show us the side to side action. This simulates turning corners or basically maneuvering.Once we get to the alternating speed bumps, we'll see the twisting action. This will simulate hitting a curb or a pothole or driving over uneven pavement. Once we get to the full speed bumps, we'll see the up and down action. This will be just like driving in and out of a parking lot, parking garage or a driveway. That's going to do it for a look at. Thule EasyFold XT 2 bike rack on a 2017 Tesla model S.
